32: Worth It

Saturday was a long day for both Belle and Delia and Sunday was worse. Belle spent the weekend at her parents' place and Delia's constant presence helped but could not hold Mirabelle's anxiety completely at bay. Mirabelle rolled through a few intense waves of edginess and the phases of calm were fewer and shorter.

Belle tinkered in the kitchen all day Sunday trying not to look at the clock. She experimented with an asparagus ice cream that was truly atrocious. By Sunday evening Belle shifted uncomfortably in the baggage claim area waiting for Davis.

Mirabelle tried to concentrate on calming her heart rate. Davie's flight was delayed for 45 minutes and the additional wait time had her spinning. Belle cursed lightly under her breath, "Merde. I hate this."

She desperately wanted herself back, she desperately missed the confidence and control she used to feel sitting in Brass and Bottle. Mirabelle sighed deeply and muttered, "But you want her more."

Davie saw Mirabelle first. Even in the distance Davis could see that she looked unsettled. She tried to approach so she could examine Mirabelle carefully without her noticing. Belle's beauty was now evident to Davis. Her eyes flickered and sparkled despite her distress. Davie felt both a physical and emotional pull that was familiar and comforting.

Mirabelle caught movement in her peripheral vision and smiled with relief as Davis closed the last twenty feet of distance. She murmured to herself, "Jesus, Davis."

"Hello Davis!" Belle tensed, forcing herself to wait patiently for Davie to reach her.

"Hello!" Davie grinned and stepped in kissing Belle softly on the cheek. "You look good Mirabelle!"

Mirabelle smirked, her voice slightly strained,"Better now Davis. Did you have a good visit?"

"Ummm-Hmmm. Very good, but I need a vacation from my vacation. Let me get my bag. I'm ready to go home."
----

Davie slipped into the car and tension and hesitation were rolling off Belle like a thick fog. Davie's brow furrowed with worry. "Belle? Are you okay?"

Mirabelle chuckled lightly. "Hmmm? Oh Oui. I'm good, better. You know, still working on managing my 'crush,' the 'sight,' and now whatever this is."

Davie laughed and kissed Belle on the cheek as she pulled from the garage. "Well, get me home and then we work on those things."

Belle shivered, "Jesus Davis, do you want me to crash?"

"Oh, sorry." Davis sighed and sunk into the seat and enjoyed the quiet ride home.
----

Davie crossed over the threshold of her house and moved immediately to her sofa, collapsing into the cushions. On the way home she realized that she was physically, emotionally, and cognitively exhausted.

Mirabelle followed,"May I Davis?" She nodded to the sofa.

"Please. Sit." Davie focused her eyes on Mirabelle and she felt her heartbeat pick up as Belle landed softly in the cushions beside her. Both the women rotated slightly so Belle could see Davie's lips clearly.

Belle could not contain the deep sigh that built within her. "I really missed you Davis."

Davie grinned, "I missed you too Mirabelle. It was a challenging weekend for me. And you comfort me. But it's better now, right?"

"Oui much better." Mirabelle's eyes were locked onto Davie's lips. A barely audible whimper escaped from Mirabelle and filled the space. "Do you want to talk about it?"
