27: Who Is Watching?
Davie felt her chest tighten uncomfortably seeing Belle in distress. Delia subtly laid her hand on Belle's forearm and smiled softly in an effort to ease her pain. "Belle, Cher you'll be fine."
Belle looked into her mother's eyes and sighed feeling a little more confident. "You're right Mama. I'll be okay. I'll be okay."
Delia looked over into Davie's concerned eyes. "Don't worry Davie. This is very different for Belle. She's not used to the strength of the connection." Delia grinned, "And, she's never been on this end of a relationship before."
"Merde! Mama!" Belle grimaced and flushed deeply with embarrassment.
"Watch your language Mirabelle!"
Davie smiled at the exchange and shifted her gaze between them waiting for an explanation. "Hmmm?"
Belle rolled her eyes and grimaced, "Davis, I'm not usually a 'relationship-kind-of-person.' You know, because of the sight. It makes it hard. So I ..."
Delia interrupted laughter sparkling in her eyes. She used air-quotes, "She 'watches a lot of Netflix!'"
"Mama! Out! Now!" Belle swatted at her mother, driving her from the table.
"Mirabelle Marie Fontaine!" Delia laughed,"Fine." She kissed Davie on the forehead,"I guess you two have a lot to talk about."
----
Belle watched her mother leave, still flushed with embarrassment she turned back to Davis and found her grinning and laughing lightly. Belle's breath caught at the vision of the woman and her moment of joy. "Jesus, Davis. You're ... wow."
"Ummm, no. Don't change the subject Mirabelle."
Belle shifted in her chair, "Merde. Okay, okay."
Davie leaned in on the table and focused on Belle. She was enjoying seeing her squirm.
"You know it was hard for me in high school."
"Mmm-Hmmm."
"Well as I got older I still managed the sight by pulling back emotionally. But ... I ... ummm ..." Belle struggled, she realized that her position on Davie's relationship with Nell would make her behavior seem hypocritical. "Well, I haven't had any relationships to speak of. All of my attempts have been kind of catastrophic." Davie frowned, saddened by the thought of Belle being alone. "So ... I have ... 'dated' women a little differently. Than most. "
Davie's eyes widened with understanding. She sat up a little straighter and stared at Belle. When Belle saw her shift she cringed and simply returned the stare waiting for the fallout. Davie's mouth broke open slowly, "You have meaningless sex."
Belle winced, "Wow. That 'sounds' really bad, even when you don't actually say it."
"But you ... Nell ... you said you couldn't do that.'"
"No Davis. I said I couldn't do that with you. I haven't 'watched Netflix' since you first came into the shop."
Davie blinked in confusion and surprise. "Wait, So you just pick up women? Is that safe?"
"Again, you make it sound really bad. I would hang out with Francois, at the Brass and Bottle, his place. And, well, yes. Occasionally, I 'picked up' women. And I am always safe." Belle smirked. "If a woman is uncertain about anything, it pops up in their thoughts pretty quickly."
