The time seemed to fly by for Davis. Before she knew it she was standing in the security line with Mirabelle who was just slightly less nervous. Davie squeezed Belle's hand, "Okay?"
"Oui, just excited." Belle half grimaced and half smiled.
Davie leaned in and kissed her gently through her hair. Her lips moved, forming the words, "I love you." Belle couldn't hear them but she felt Davis's soft skin move over her ear in the cadence of the declaration.
Belle sighed softly, "Davis ..."
----
The flight to Philadelphia was just over 3 hours and Mirabelle handled it well. She spent a good bit of the flight gazing out the window. Her hand rarely broke from Davie's and the flight attendant seemed to pick up on her light anxiety. She checked on them a few times. "Are you ladies okay?"
Davie turned and nodded. Belle saw a crisp image of their hands intertwined.
"Yes, thank you, Cher."
The attendant blushed slightly, caught up in both Belle's accent and beauty. She nodded and said, "We will land in about 30 minutes." just before she stepped away.
Davis turned and looked at Mirabelle. She smiled at the flicker in Belle's eyes. "She wasn't thinking of the landing?"
Belle smirked. "No Cher, not thinking of that."
----
Davis moved through the hotel room ready for bed but fidgeting. Belle watched her movements from the bed, she was surprised Davis wasn't tired. The drive out to Germantown was slow. Traffic was bad. Dinner was a quick stop at a Sheetz service station and sandwich shop.
"Davis," Belle's voice was soft and filled with concern,"What can I do?"
Davis stopped moving and sat at the end of the bed. She sighed and drug her fingers through her hair. "I don't know Mirabelle. I'm anxious and scared. What if they hate me?"
Belle's eyes burned, she moved from the top of the bed and sat beside Davis wrapping her arm around her shoulders, pulling her in. "How could they? You were kids. It was an accident, right? A storm?"
"Yes, an accident." A sob was building deep within Davis. Belle felt her body tense and Davis turned into her pulling her legs up and burying herself in Belle's embrace.
Belle had not pushed Davis about the accident before. She experienced the emotional fallout from the death of Evelyn but didn't fully understand the circumstances or the intensity of Davis's pain. She couldn't stand on the sidelines anymore. Belle felt an undeniable need to ease Davis's pain, to share in the suffering.
"What happened Davis? Please tell me. Let me help you. Why is there so much pain and guilt?"
Davis pushed further into Belle seeking warmth and comfort. She kissed Mirabelle lightly on her neck trying to hold the pain at bay. Her arms slipped around Belle and she shifted guiding Mirabelle back into the bed.
Belle felt Davis's pursuit intensify. She kissed and sucked and pulled on the skin on Belle's neck and above her collar bones. Belle sighed both at the sensation and in sorrow. She steadied Davis and rolled her to her back letting her body blanket the woman. Mirabelle braced herself and looked down into Davis's eyes. "Davis you are wonderful. I love you." Belle dropped down, kissing Davis softly, lovingly. She pulled back, she could see tears slipping from the corners of Davis's eyes."Talk to me. Let me hear that beautiful voice. Let me help you Mon Amor."
Davis shuddered with a sob, Belle kissed her again. She let her lips linger and then gently kissed Davis's eyelids, tasting the salty pain.
"I promise you. There is nothing you could tell me that would drive me away from you. Nothing you could say. I can't see you anymore, Davis." Belle paused, smiling softly,"I can't see you, you're like family, please, talk to me."
