45: Agony and Anger
Davis rolled in the bed. As soon as Mirabelle felt movement she propped herself up and waited to see if Davis would wake fully. She could hear in the broken cadence of her breath and knew that Davis was awake. "Hey ..."
Davis turned searching for Belle's eyes in the darkened room. She sighed when she found them softly glimmering, the limited light bouncing off them.
"Baby ..."
Davie's voice sent an intense shiver down the length of Belle's spine.
"What time is it?"
"Early, 2:15. How are you feeling?"
"I don't know. Exhausted. Different." Davis sat up, crossing her legs and facing Mirabelle. She ran her hands through her hair helping wakefulness along. Belle sat up too, facing her. Before she could speak Davie's stomach rumbled.
Belle's eyes widened with surprise and she smiled softly. "Davis! You're hungry!"
Davie shrugged,"Um, I guess so."
"There's got to be a 24 hour breakfast place near here. Pancakes?"
"That sounds incredible."
Belle and Davis pulled on the bare minimum in required clothing for their late night excursion. Both in jeans and sweatshirts they found themselves tucked away in a corner booth of a nearly deserted iHop.
----
Belle grinned watching Davis eat. She could see the impact the food was having on her almost immediately.
"Good?"
"Mmmm. You?"
"Hang on." Belle took a bite of her food and spoke through her mouthful. "Yup! Feeling better?"
"Mmmm. Much."
Mirabelle watched Davis eat the entire time. She picked at her food, but she really wasn't interested in it. Occasionally Davis would catch her in a stare but she was quite content to enjoy the shared silence.
----
By 5:30 the women were back in bed together drifting slowly off to sleep. Davis laid on her stomach, head on her pillow looking at Belle. Belle was on her side, head propped up on her hand she was pulling her fingers through Davis's hair.
"Davis?"
"Hmmm?"
Mirabelle whispered intimately, maintaining eye contact.
"Davis, I think you are wonderful." Davie smiled and sighed softly. "I love you. You amaze me." A small smile played on Mirabelle's mouth. "It's not just your lips. It's not just your thoughtful eyes or your beautiful mind."
"Mirabelle ..." Davis murmured back.
"Let me finish." Mirabelle's tone intensified, her eyes steadied with both certainty and compassion. "I think you have suffered in a way that most people cannot even begin to understand. But your resilience, Mon Amor. Your fight. It's magical. Your own special magic." Davis could feel her chest tighten and her breath became slightly strained. "It's knowing that you lost someone you loved so deeply, in such a painful way. But you get up and face each day anyway. You try to make this world a better place everyday. You amaze me."
Davis blinked furiously but the emotion shining in her eyes could not be contained. "You're strong Davis. Stronger than me, I would break, I wouldn't be able to do what you do. If I lost you. I couldn't face this world with optimism and courage." Davie stared back at Mirabelle. She was completely locked up. "I love you Davis." Belle smiled lightly. "Nod if you understand." Davis nodded.
