16: Crush Not Love

Mirabelle and Davie sat on opposite ends of the sofa. Again they slipped into a mutually silent moment. Davie felt a tension in the space that was driven Mirabelle's confessions earlier that night. Two thoughts tumbled through Davie's head, the first one made sense to her: "Is it real? Is she special in a scary way?" The second one she couldn't understand why it suddenly seemed to dominate her thoughts: "She is beautiful."

Davie took a breath, she "spoke" with both her hands and mouth. "Okay Belle, tell me."

Mirabelle nodded. Davie's eyes widened with surprise when a small smile emerged on Belle's lips. "Okay, I want you to know first, I think I have a crush on you. So just try to keep that in mind because it makes this situation a little harder than usual for me."

Davie blushed lightly, "Okay, Belle."

Mirabelle cleared her throat and half grimaced and half smiled. The tension in the room seemed to have diminished slightly. "So, you know when people speak directly to me I get pictures in my head. Sometimes pictures even if they are near to me. But usually only if what they are seeing is intense."

Davie's brow furrowed, she was still a little skeptical, but she nodded. "Mmm-Hmmm."

"Only the Fontaine family is 'immune' to my sight. It must be a genetic thing on the Fontaine side, because I see Papa clearly but I've been trying to figure Julian out for years."

Davie smiled softly and tilted her head considering the possible genetic explanations.

"In your case, of course, I see nothing because I can't hear you. But I've seen every visual impression other people have about you." Belle shifted in the sofa, blushing lightly, "I think that's because of the 'crush.'"

Davie's brow furrowed,"Belle, have you seen a doctor? Had a brain scan? How do you know it's the other person's thoughts and not just what you imagine them to be?"

Belle smirked, "It's not a disorder. It's who I am, normally. It's my family's heritage a kind of a genetic legacy. Do you want me to describe what I 'saw' between you and your friend? To see if it's real?"

"Oh! No. Hmmm ... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you."

"No problem, you didn't. Anyway, I have this 'thing' for you. And I didn't mean to see you through your friend's visions and experiences, but it happened." Belle grimaced, "And I can't unsee it." Mirabelle stopped speaking and watched Davie as she processed everything. Her careful observation soon turned into an unapologetic stare. Belle's heart started pounding and the longer she looked at Davie the more her body tensed with want and desire.

Davie nodded slowly,"So, you saw that Dr. Wright wanted a date? You saw the intentions of the man at the market? You saw Nell and I?"

Belle sighed, conflicted by her body's response to Davie's lips and her mind's response to the line of questioning. "Yes. Through their perspectives. In the form of pictures or images."

Davie's lips moved,"Oh." She sat back leaning into the corner and arm of the sofa. She looked into the space between them. "And you'll continue to see that?"

"Yes, I could."

Davie did not respond. She sat in silence, dazed, her mind felt numb. Mirabelle stood slowly, she looked down at Davie and wanted so desperately to kiss the woman.

"Davie, I'm leaving now. Thank you for letting me explain. Please come see Mama this week. She'll worry about you. I'll make myself scarce."

Davie sat up a little straighter, she wasn't sure what to say or how to respond to Belle. She stood too and found they were standing very much in the same way they were on the Fontaine front porch. The heat created between them made her skin tingle. Now when Davie looked at Belle a knot formed in her throat and she felt tension and she was unsure and unsettled. She could see Belle's eyes flicker with the same hesitation.
