40: You Know Now

Joan and Richard leaned forward into the computer. "Honey, what?"

"Mom she thinks she might have heard my voice. I 'spoke' her name. But she's not sure and it hasn't happened again."

Joan blinked stunned. "What does that mean Davie? Is your voice coming back?"

"I don't know. I think the more time I spend with Belle the more all of me is coming back. Everything that was trapped is breaking free, slowly. I don't know if she heard my voice or was simply hoping, like me."

Joan nodded, still mesmerized by the news.

"Mom, I'm sharing the words and memories from the accident with Belle. But I have this nagging feeling. I think I need to see Mr. and Mrs. Reese." As soon as she signed it, she knew it was true. She felt a little more anchored.

"What do you mean Honey?" Joan whispered with sorrow. "Evie's parents? What is it?"

"Mom, she's been on my mind. I'm working through things with Belle and she's been on my mind." Davis felt her eyes burning. "I think I need them to know the truth. About us. About the boathouse. Will you help me connect with them? Please?"

"Of course Davis. Of course. I'll try to get their contact information. I'm not sure if they're still local, they had family in Philadelphia they visited shortly after ..." Richard grimaced. "Davie, they might not want to see you. They might not want to know the truth about you and Evie."

Davie winced and nodded, "I understand, thank you."

The Kaplans sat for a moment in shared silent reflection, considering each other.

"Are you okay Honey?"

"Mmm-Hmm. Better now. I have to go. Students are back next week and I'm not ready. I love you. Thank you for this."

"We love you too Baby. I'll text you the information."

When Davie ended the connection she felt emotionally and physically taxed. She sat quietly in her office for a long time, unfocused, just trying to regain balance. Her buzzing phone drew her attention. A call was coming in from Cane and Cream. Davie was perplexed, usually Belle texted, she bluetoothed the call into her computer.

"Hello?"

"Davie? Hello Cher. It's Delia."

"Hello Delia! It's nice to hear from you. Is everything okay? Belle?"

"Oh Cher, Belle is at the house. She's having a hard day. Do you think you could go check on her? I was going to try to make it back for lunch but I'm still checking expiration dates."

Davie's heart skipped a beat. She thought only of Belle and her need as she stood. "Of course Delia! I'm on my way."

"Thank you Cher. Go around to the back, look for the key underneath the medium-sized frog. I left her upstairs in her room."

Belle tried to escape into sleep and ice cream all morning. Her sleep was peppered with particularly vivid and intense emotional dreams and flashes and visions of Davis that drove her into the kitchen. Orange-Clove ice cream and memories of the taste of it over Davis's skin drove her back into the bed.

Belle moved back and forth all morning trying to find solace in sleep or ice cream. She lay unmoving in the bed feeling the weight of her need pressing down, she stared at the wall lost in a semi-conscious daze. As she looked at the same spot on the wall Belle felt something shift and change. Her breath was less effortful and her mind felt less thick and less slow.
