30: Relief

Davie worked for three more hours finally feeling settled enough to step away from the office and lab from Thursday into Monday. She flipped the lights, locked the door, and started moving and texting.

"hey done here but need to pack"
"early flight"

"you must be exhausted"

"Yes"
"looking forward to 4 days off"

"can I make you dinner"

"please!"

"See you at your place 7pm?"

"Perfect"
----

Davie opened the door and found Belle smiling with relief and holding a grocery bag from Langenstein's Market.

Davie stepped back grinning, "So excited! I'm famished."

"Davis, you have to take better care of yourself. Have you eaten today?"

"Ummm ..."

"Right, I didn't think so."

Belle set the bag down on the counter and turned to face Davie. She was pleasantly surprised that Davie closed the distance trapping her between her arms at the edge of the counter. Davis spoke slowly. "Mirabelle, thank you." She moved past Belle's eyeline and kissed her softly at the cusp of her ear and on her neck.

Belle shivered and reached, placing her hands on Davie's hips, "Jesus Davis."

Davie chuckled and pulled back,"I need to keep packing, okay?"

"Okay, Cher. I'll start dinner. Seafood Paella, Citrus Salad. It will take some time so no rush."

Davie grinned and kissed Belle lightly on the lips,"Thank you."
----

Davie's eyes rolled with pleasure at the rich, layered flavors of the Paella. "Mmmm Wow. Wow Belle."

Belle laughed lightly, her whole body warmed with pleasure. "Thank you, Davis." Mirabelle tried to put on a brave face,"So, are you ready for your trip?"

Davie typed as she ate. "Yes. I'm ready to go now. I'm looking forward to seeing my parents and Vineeta." Davie paused thinking, "It's been almost 4 months."

"Wow Cher, that's a long time to be away from the ones you love." Belle sighed softly and pushed her food around the plate. "I don't know how you do it."

Davie nodded, concentrating on her food, she missed the nuance of Mirabelle's reflection. "Technology definitely helps. But you're right. It's hard. You just learn. To manage. It gets easier."

"What will you do when you get back ... home?"

Again, Davie missed the layered nuance of the question. Davie grinned, she picked up her phone and typed furiously. "I hope to sleep some. That's up there on the list. Then family of course. Mom and Dad work downtown but they've taken some time off. I miss them." Mirabelle nodded. "I'll visit with friends from 'U Dub,' Vineeta and her family on Saturday." Mirabelle felt her chest tighten painfully and she pushed back the jealousy that rose in her. "Back on Sunday. Luckily for me winter break means a return to a less stressful time in the office."

Davie looked up from her phone and saw a smile on Mirabelle's face but sadness in her eyes. "Oh, I'm sorry Belle. I know it will be hard for you. What did your mom say?"

"Well, my discomfort is definitely related to the Fontaine gifts. Other people in the family have experienced the same thing. It will go away."

Davie blinked and processed. Belle's intense connection to her was a product of the Fontaine magic and it would go away. "Mmmm. That's good then, right?"
