08: Friends
Davie and Nell stepped out on the street and began the walk back toward main campus to pick up the loop that would shuttle them out to the medical school. They moved slowly, giving Nell the opportunity to look at Davis as she responded in the limited conversation. Nell was perfectly satisfied in unapologetically flirting with Davie.
"So, Davie.I don't really need to go over to east campus." Nell grinned and laughed lightly. "But I'd happily walk you back to your office."
Davie chuckled, "I gathered."
"Of course you did." Nell smirked, "Beautiful and perceptive. Do you really need to go back into the office? I'm sure we could find something to do."
Davie stopped moving and turned to Nell drawing her full attention. She considered the young woman. Nell had a girl-next-door look about her. Youthful, genuine, mischievous. Her brown eyes sparkled with life. Davie half grimaced and half smiled. She pulled out her phone and held it up asking, "Number?"
"Oh, 504-555-1212"
Nell looked down as a text chimed in.
"Sorry"
"Easier"
"ok?"
Nell looked up, "I understand, perfect."
Davie smiled and started moving again.
"nell i'm not in the best head space right now"
Nell read and laughed and responded, "I'm almost never in the best head space!"
Davie's eyes widened, drawn into the light humor she laughed too.
"i just wanted to be upfront"
"i really have a full plate"
"i'm kind of in an emotional twist right now"
"Carter was trying to draw me out of my headspace today"
"with ice cream"
"Wow! He's a good friend!" Nell laughed, "I might call him up myself at the end of the semester!"
Davie glanced over at Nell and smirked. "Hmmmm."
"Davie, I don't want or need anything from you that you aren't comfortable giving. But I'd love to help you get out of that beautiful head of yours for a little bit. I'm up for some fun."
"and how do you suggest we do that?"
"fun?"
Nell smiled and slipped her hand into Davie's, pulling her up the sidewalk and slipping into a narrow alley between two row buildings. Before Davie could react the woman pressed into her covering her mouth pulling persistently at her lips and stroking her skin gently with her tongue. Davie gasped softly and when her mouth broke open and her jaw relaxed, Nell took the newly accessible space.
Nell stepped back, her body tensed with desire. She took a breath to regain balance and perspective. Davie stood staring, her mouth forming a silent "oh."
"Davie, I'll text you my address. Stop over on your way home and I'll 'help' you. It will be fun, promise."
Davie blinked, her thoughts and emotions were non-linear. They flashed and bounced. Desire. Pain. Relief. Guilt. Need. Loneliness. She stared at Nell and nodded slowly.
"Good." Nell pulled Davie back to the sidewalk. She chuckled,"I'm actually headed that way." Nell nodded in the opposite direction. "Come see me tonight Davie. Take a night off."
----
Davis found it incredibly difficult to concentrate all afternoon. Thoughts of Vineeta and Nell were a constant distraction. Davie engaged in an unwinnable internal debate over the impending evening. She checked university policy on interdepartmental dating. She was pretty certain that what Nell had in mind didn't fall under the umbrella of dating. When Nell's text chimed in, Davie was no more certain.
