36: Okay
As Davie moved toward Cane and Cream she could tell she was already feeling better. The memories and sorrow receding with every step. When she stepped through the front door she grinned at the sight of Mirabelle. Belle's eyes sparkled with happiness for her.
Davie had a surreal moment, a small epiphany. Belle was genuine and unabashed with her feelings, she was fearless.
"Hello Davis!" Mirabelle beamed.
Davie saw the shop empty and she moved to the counter and leaned over to Mirabelle. Belle was surprised by the gesture but did not hesitate to bridge the space. She kissed Davis and her eyes rolled with delight. Davie sighed and pulled lightly, chasing her slightly as they broke. "Mirabelle, I really missed you today."
"Jesus, Davis. Me too." Belle tasted something wonderful in Davie's kiss. "Are you okay? You seem different."
"I feel different. Rough night but I loved having you out at the lab yesterday. Where's your mom?"
Belle nodded,"Your voice Davis, your beautiful voice. Mama's in the back she'll be out soon."
"I have something for you, a surprise." Davie's eyes sparkled with joy.
Belle could clearly see Davie was excited. "What?! Davis, Cher?"
Davis raised an eyebrow,"Wait for your mom?"
"Ugh! Do we have to Davis?! Please?!" Belle couldn't keep the whine out of her voice."
Davie rolled with laughter,"Okay." She pulled out her phone and sent Belle a text. When Belle heard her phone chime her brow furrowed with confusion.
"hi belle"
Belle looked up,"Cher?"
"audio file coming"
"Ringtone?"
"edited in lab"
Mirabelle's eyes widened with expectation. "Oh please! Oui, please."
Belle's phone chimed with an incoming message, audio file attached. "Hi! It's me ... Davis ..."
"Jesus." Mirabelle felt her eyes burning with emotion. "Jesus, Mama?! Come out front you're going to love this!"
Davis rolled with laughter at Mirabelle's and then Delia's excitement as they sat and played and replayed the audio file. She was touched by the emotional response of both the women. She remembered the first time she shared her voice with Vineeta in a home video. Her parents were with them as they watched and their responses were very similar.
"Oh Cher, that is so wonderful. You have a beautiful voice!"
"Thank you Delia." Davie's gaze shifted to Belle,"You have a beautiful daughter, she's helping me find my 'voice' again."
Belle stared at Davis, she breath caught and she winced. She spoke softly to her mother but did not break from her gaze, "Mama, I can't. I can't."
Delia examined Belle carefully, "Okay Mirabelle, I can see that." Delia stood and kissed Davie on the forehead. "When you're done, come out to the house. I'd love to cook for you."
Davie looked at her confused but nodded,"Okay see you soon." She watched Delia leave, shutting off lights as she moved.
Davis looked back to Belle, "You 'can't'?"
"Davis, I've been trying to manage my feelings for you. But I can't, not anymore."
Davie winced, not understanding. "Mirabelle, manage? Is it the pain?"
