14: Blood ~ Love ~ Magic
As the first round of dinner came slowly to an end Davie felt as if she would burst. No words could capture what she was feeling. Both physically and emotionally overwhelmed she sat disconnected from time and space.
"Dr. Kaplan? Are you okay?" Davie looked up to see Charlie settling in across from her. She smiled and nodded, a little dazed. "Mmm-hmmm."
Charlie grinned softly, "I know it's a lot. It took me a bit to get used to it too." Again a nod and a small smile from Davie. "Would you like to sit on the porch with me? Sometimes the evening air helps." Davie now nodded, completely engaged and thankful for Charlie's offer.
Charlie and Davie sat on the front porch rocking in silence and listening to the sounds of the Fontaine family inside the house. The space rolled with laughter and broken English-French-Creole banter. In the cool, calming air Davie's thoughts returned to her earlier walk with Belle. She tried to accurately replay the memory wondering if she was imagining any part of the afternoon.
Davie pulled out her phone,"Charlie, you have a wonderful family, quite special."
Charlie chuckled,"Yes, the Fontaine family is unique. Delia says they're bound by blood, love, and magic. I tend to think that their love is their magic."
"Do you miss them? When you're out on the rigs?"
"Oh yes! How can you not? One of these days I'll retire and tinker with Jules at his shop. Delia has already started tinkering with Belle."
Davie turned toward Charlie and moved her mouth, "Oh?"
"Well, yes. Cane and Cream will always be like a second home to Delia but Belle is really the genius behind the ice cream. They were just a vanilla and chocolate kind of place until Mirabelle started getting involved. People just always assume that Delia is the driving force behind the shop."
Davie nodded and thought back to Belle's unique offering of lemon-basil sorbet. "I see."
Charlie smiled and continued, "Both Mirabelle and Julian really excel in hands-on endeavours." Pride washed through Charlie's voice,"I think they're a better version of me in that way. Jules can fix anything in his shop and Belle can put together flavors that shouldn't make sense, but blow your mind. They got Delia's striking beauty and I think they're both brilliant in their own way."
Davie rocked for a moment looking out over the porch and considering Charlie's words. She thought to herself,"An icecream engineer and a genius machinist." Then her thoughts drifted to Charlie's other observation "striking beauty."
Davie's mind tumbled and she visualized the siblings, and remembered first seeing Belle in the ice cream shop. She knew she was beautiful but would not have used the word 'striking.' She considered now that maybe she simply didn't see it. Until very recently Vineeta overwhelmed her senses and thoughts. "Hmmm." Davie continued to rock and ponder.
Charlie looked over and could see Dr. Kaplan deep in thought and working through the food coma. He smiled and reflected on the young woman as he enjoyed the quiet company.
----
"Where is Davie?" Delia looked through the kitchen and into the living room.
Jules laughed lightly,"She's out on the porch with Papa, I think she was feeling a little overwhelmed. They're bonding."
Francois chimed in,"I'm a Fontaine and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed! Delia sit down for half a second. Come over here and give some of that good stuff."
Delia blushed and moved to sit beside her cousin,"Francois! I will sit with you because you watch over my Mirabelle, Amor, and I love you for that!"
