17: Rebound

Wednesday morning Davie looked down at her phone and saw the text from Vineeta. She felt surprisingly happy at the thought of touching base. There was less anxious tension and heartache.

"hope you had a good break"
"up for chat?"

"Hey"
"have classes"
"good break, missed you"
"talk this pm?"

"yes tonight"
----

Davie's day moved quickly. It was just one of those days. Work came at Davie fast and furiously all day. Only occasional, thoughtful moments of Belle broke up the constant stream of work.

Davie got home and started to settle in when her phone chimed.

"Hey"
"Ready"
"miss you"
...

"Davie?! Can you see me? Oh, there you are!"

"Vineeta? Wow, it's good to see you." Davie smiled and sighed, emotions flared. "You look great."

"You too. How are you feeling? Is this too hard?"

Davie grimaced,"Mmmm. It's getting easier. I'm making some new connections, thinking about stepping 'back out there.' How about you? Okay?"

"It feels a little awkward. But I want to be able to talk to you. I want to have a friend, someone I love ... that I can reach out to. Don't you?"

Davie nodded, her throat felt tight and her eyes burned a little bit.

"So, How have you been? Did you get turkey?"

Davie smiled at the memory of the Fontaine Thanksgiving. "Oh yes, deep fried! And oyster stuffing. And homemade ice cream. How about you?"

"Well, nothing so exotic. Our department had a Thanksgiving dinner. I ate my weight in sides. Davie ... you look good ... better. You smiled. What is going on there?"

"I'm not sure V. I think I'm just starting to hit my stride, making friends, dating." Davie paused, trying to connect through the screen. "Figuring out how to love you and let you go."

"Wow. That's wonderful. A little hard to hear, but I'm happy for you. I've worried about you."

"What about you Vineeta? Are you excited about the move?"

Vineeta's eyes lit up and she laughed lightly. "So excited! It's been extraordinarily cold here. Not just wet. I think I'm ready for Maryland! Although, it's so far away from what I'm used to. I was finally getting used to Seattle."

Davie smiled softly, she "got it." She sighed "I like this V. I've missed you and you're right. We need each other and it's a little easier now. Right?"

"Yeah Baby, I think so." Vineeta's eyes glistened with emotion. "I'll always love you Davie. I think you're wonderful."

"Me too V. Can I come up and watch you 'walk' in a couple weeks? Do you think that would 'work?'"

"I'd really like that. I'm heading over to Bangalore for 3 weeks before I move. Mom and Dad want to show me off and probably try to marry me off too!"

"Uh oh!"

"Yeah, I know. I think they thought once we grew apart that meant I was all of the sudden straight. Like you were the only woman who could 'turn' me."

Davie rolled with laughter.

"Hey! It's not funny Davie! I think they're going to have a hard time getting over you! You are the only woman they could imagine me going gay for! So naturally, once you moved the spell was broken."
