11: Lies

Davie turned back to Nell and found her smiling. Her eyes sparkling with laughter and hope.

Davie tilted her head slightly, "What do you think, Nell."

"I think I have a couple of hours to kill Davie."

Davie's lips moved,"Oh." she chuckled, she switched over to texting.

"not sure that's a good idea"

Nell looked at her screen and laughed,"No? I feel like it could be so much fun. We can keep it light." Even as she spoke the words Nell knew that she might be interested in more than just sex, but the lie seemed harmless in the moment.

Davie remembered the days following their last encounter and the guilt and regret she felt. She caught sight of Delia out of the corner of her eye and felt immediately grounded and comforted. Davie smiled softly.

"nell you're wonderful"
"but we can't"

Nell felt disappointment tighten her chest. She leaned in closer. "Why Davie? It was so good."

Mirabelle glanced through the small glass window in the door separating the front and the back of the shop. She saw the woman lean in closer to Davie. "C'est des conneries! (this is bullshit)"

Davie smiled softly and moved her lips slowly, unintentionally torturing Nell. "Yes it was ... but ... I'm sorry Nell ... I can't." Davie returned her text application.

"i can't"
"it's not me"
"i'm not ready for anything else"

Nell read the series of texts. She sighed and smirked lightly, maintaining her position on the cusp of Davie's personal space. "Dr. Kaplan, I understand. I do. But what you did to me ..." Nell's smirk widened into a grin as she watched Davie's body tighten in response to her words. "I've been having a hard time forgetting."

Mirabelle paced back and forth catching glimpses of the intimate conversation. She was grateful that she couldn't hear anything but her imagination was torturing her too.

Davie grimaced.
"you're not making this easy!"
"nell i think you're wonderful"
"but right now i cant see how beautiful you really are"
"you deserve that"

Nell could see honesty and compassion in Davie's eyes and it eased the moment.

"i want you to know love not just lust"
"you deserve that"

Nell sighed in momentary defeat. She was surprised at how Davie's words both were disappointing but felt 'right' as well. "Ok Davie, you win. For now. But I'm going to give you something to think about." Nell closed the gap before Davie had a chance to protest. Her lips pressed gently in, resting softly on Davie's skin before they sucked and pulled lightly tasting the sweet ice cream lingering on her lips.

Mirabelle's eyes widened with jealousy. She breathed out slowly, "Merde!"

Nell stood her eyes again filled with youthful joy. "I think that's my new favorite flavor of ice cream. I'll text you after the break Davie. Enjoy your holiday!"

Davie nodded slightly dazed,"You too."

After Nell stepped out Davie sat staring at the wall for sometime. It was Delia that finally drew her out of her unfocused thoughts.

"Mon Cher, are you okay?" Delia smiled down at Davie. "Your ... friend ... she left you on your own?"

Davie blinked,"Oh, yes." Davie shrugged,"Back to work."
