35: Weird
Mirabelle felt Davie relax and come back to herself. "Okay? With me?"
Davie nodded and took a deep, slightly shaky breath. She turned into Belle, they were close enough they were sharing the same air. Davie's mouth moved slowly, emotion washed through her eyes. "Mirabelle, I'm sorry."
Belle sighed with relief,"Davis don't be sorry. I am grateful to be here with you." She kissed Davie, softly and sweetly. "Let me walk you home."
Davis nodded letting Belle take her hand. She moved with Davis from the lab, back to her office, and then away from the building in silence. The women walked, letting the evening have the time and space. Mirabelle's heartbeat echoed in her ears and her body shivered at Davie's proximity. She refused to release the woman's hand as they navigated the streets. Once they reached the house Mirabelle let Davie lead the way into the house.
"Cher, go change. I'll see about finding you something to eat."
Davie nodded and moved deeper into the house to change. Belle scavenged through the kitchen but found it tragically barren of anything fresh. Davis had not taken the time to grocery shop. When Davie returned to the kitchen she found Belle at the table with a mug of tea. She stood to get Davie one too.
"Sit." Belle laughed lightly,"Pizza's on the way."
"Oh, sorry Mirabelle."
"No problem, sit and relax."
Belle and Davis sat at the table soaking in each other's presence and sipping their tea. When the pizza arrived they transitioned to the meal without breaking the comfort of the silent reflection. Belle glanced up at the clock, "Davis?"
"Mmmm?"
"I'm going to head home. Get some rest Davis. You have work tomorrow, right?"
Davie nodded, still in a semi-daydream state.
"Will you be alright?"
Davie nodded, she blinked and made eye contact and connection with Belle. "Will you be alright Belle? Do you need me?"
Belle grinned,"Oui Cher. I think I might always need you. But I will also be alright. You need some rest Davis. I'll call tomorrow to check on you. Okay?"
"Okay Belle. Thank you."
Belle moved home slowly. Her heart ached for Davis, the echo of Davie's pain still resonated with Mirabelle.
----
Davie sat at the kitchen table in semi-darkness for most of the evening. She hadn't realized what the video would reveal. She wasn't emotionally prepared to see Evelyn.
----
"Dad, I'm going out with the team, okay?"
Joan interjected, "Davis it's a school night."
"Mom, Evie's going too. She's my ride. I'll be home on time."
"Fine Davie. Please be careful. Home by 8:30, no exceptions! Tell Evelyn we said 'hello.'"
Davie grinned, kissed her parents and jogged over to grab her bag and make her way back down to the field house to get her book bag. As she moved she spotted Evie and waved.
Evie was wearing her typical 'uniform' skinny jeans, vans, ringer-t hoodie. Her blue, slightly shaggy pixie cut hair framed her face perfectly. Davie thought she looked adorable. She picked up her pace slightly. Evelyn waved back at Davie and moved to get her car. She drove down to the field house to wait for Davie.
