47: Sometimes It Doesn't Matter, Sometimes It Does
It was nearly 11am before Davie and Belle made it down to the kitchen showered and dressed for the day. Belle found it particularly difficult to leave Davie's room, she didn't want to lose her voice. She would have been happy to have stayed holed up in the room for the rest of the day.
"Well good morning girls! Feeling better? You slept for a long time!" Joan moved, kissing Davie on the cheek.
"We feel great Mom." Davie's eyes lit up with laughter and joy. She moved her hands and mouth slowly. "I was showing Mirabelle some of my high school photos."
Belle blushed slightly but smoothly responded. "Oui! So much better, thank you! Davis looks so young and beautiful in the pictures." Belle sat down at the kitchen table next to Davis. She unapologetically moved her chair closer to Davis.
"Did you play sports in high school Mirabelle?"
"Oh no Cher. I just like the uniforms." Belle shot Davis a quick look. "I was a wallflower. Very withdrawn. Shy and awkward. If Davis and I had met in school I would have never had the courage to talk to her."
Davie turned and grinned at Belle. "I definitely would have talked to you." She bridged the space between them and kissed her softly, letting her lips settle and then pulled away slowly.
Belle's eyes rolled with pleasure and she spoke barely above a whisper, "Jesus, Davis."
Richard cleared his throat uncomfortably, "Um ... well ... should we head to the market?"
----
Belle strolled through Pike's Market stopping at every vendor to taste and try the various foods. Her mind spun and her mouth was overwhelmed with flavors and textures. The vendors, men and women alike, were absolutely enamoured with Mirabelle's exotic look and sultry accent. Davis followed her through the market lost in the experience feeling like she was spiraling deeper into Mirabelle.
In a quiet moment Joan and Davis stood off to the side and watched as Richard and Belle sampled and re-sampled more than a dozen different jellies. Joan examined her daughter carefully while Davis watched, dazed by the vision of Mirabelle.
"Honey?" Joan pulled Davis out of her stare. "It's different now, right? You weren't this serious about her in December?"
"Yes, it is different. It's a little scary Mom but it feels perfectly right. And my voice. She hears me. And I have no idea why."
"Will you take her to 'U Dub'?"
"No."
Joan's eyes widened slightly at the resolve in her daughter's sharp movements.
"I don't want to make her a subject in a study. I know what that feels like. I just want to be with her."
"Okay Honey, I understand, will you visit Evie this trip?"
"Yes. On my own. I want Belle to really relax and enjoy the next couple of days. She deserves it, it's been a lot for her to process."
----
The Kaplans and Belle moved down to the Waterfront restaurant so Belle could taste some Pacific Northwest seafood and compare it to New Orleans.
They were seated quickly, the restaurant was only moderately busy, it was still a little early to hit the evening dinner rush. The hostess sat them at a table near the back of the restaurant that offered them a view of the water and the main seating area.
When their server arrived she took in the table and immediately noticed Davie using ASL she tilted her head in consideration. Belle's eyes shifted to the woman, she looked to be about that same age as Davis.
