37: Orange - Clove

Over the course of the next weeks Belle and Davis fell into a comfortable routine in both work and connecting with each other. Time seemed to slow and allow Mirabelle and Davis to catch up to each other and find their shared rhythm. Their weeks were broken up nicely by the holidays and they immersed themselves in each other during those days.

Charlie wasn't home for the Winter break so Belle, Davie, Julian, Francois and Love joined Delia for the holiday meals. Davie was enjoying the evolving dynamic in the group. It felt like she slipped easily into a sibling-like dynamic.

Belle spent a good amount of time at Delia's house helping with the pralines and experimenting with ice cream flavors. She found that her emotional discomfort was receding. She always had a shadow of a longing for Davis but it was only occasionally discomforting and slowly becoming her new "normal." Mirabelle felt she needed the connection and would miss it if it disappeared entirely.

One morning Delia watched Belle eating cereal and smiling to herself as she thought of Davis. Belle looked up and caught her mother's gaze.

Belle grinned, "What Mama?"

"Oh Cher, you know." Delia smiled and her eyes sparkled. "Have you figured it out yet Mirabelle?"

Belle raised an eyebrow, "Figured out what?"

"Well, how are you feeling now? How's the pain?"

"Different. Not gone, not pain, maybe slightly uncomfortable. Longing? But it feels like it could be wonderful, in a familiar way."

"Oui, I understand." Delia grinned, "So what does that mean Belle?"

"Oh! Um, it means Davis is falling in love with me?"

"Oui, it means the relationship and connection is strengthening. Belle it means you will know. Probably before she tells you, maybe before she knows."

"Oh." Mirabelle's smile broadened and her eyes shimmered with joy.

"Oui Cher, but you will need to be patient again. You will need to let her discover that for herself. She will come to you. It will be hard to wait, but when she does ..."

Belle sighed thinking about Davis and her love. "I understand, I remember Papa's image. I will wait."

For the first time since Davie arrived in New Orleans she felt she was finding balance and routine in her day to day responsibilities and her research. Her relationship with Belle was constant and comforting. Belle seemed better, she didn't mention the pain or discomfort and Davis didn't worry about her suffering.

Davie found that more of the memories and words released and floated through her thoughts with relative ease. On occasion she felt slightly overwhelmed and unsure, but generally she felt much less at the mercy of her own mind.

Davie sat at her desk processing some data from her most recent lab time when she heard a knock and looked up to find Nell smiling with the most amusing suntan lines from ski goggles. "Dr. Kaplan! Have you missed me?"

Davie laughed lightly and gestured to the chair at her desk. "Nell! You look like you spent some time on the slopes. Come in!" Nell sat and adjusted the iPad and software so she and Davie could speak easily. "Did you enjoy your break?"

"So much!" Nell laughed at herself,"Probably too much. How about you? How was Seattle?"

"I had a great break. Seattle was good but busy. I've been putting in a lot of lab time and I spent the holidays with Belle and her family."
