*Nick's POV*
I sighed as I took a seat at the kitchen table. This was the hardest day out of the year for me- it was my daughter, (Y/N)'s, birthday. I looked at the pictures I had set up on the table and couldn't help the tears that started to fall; she would have been 18 today.
*******Flashback********
I was making dinner when the phone rang. I brushed my hands on my jeans and walked over to the phone. "Hello?" "Is this Mr. Groff?" "Yes, who is this?" "My name is Corey Martin, I'm a doctor at Mercy Hospital. Sir, your daughter, (Y/N), was in a car accident. We need you to come down immediately." "Y-yeah. I'll be right there." I hung up the phone and stared at it, not believing anything I had just heard. When I realized that this was for real, I turned the stove off and grabbed my keys while sprinting towards my car. I drove as fast as I could, not caring if I was going 20 over or not. I sped into the parking lot and parked at the first place I could see before sprinting inside. I ran up tot he front desk and saw a nurse talking on the phone. "Excuse me." She held up a finger and let out a little laugh. "Hey, I'm talking to you." She rolled her eyes and covered the mouth piece. "What." I felt my blood boil. "I need to know what room (Y/N) Groff is in." She started typing on the computer and I felt my foot start to bounce. "She's in room 340 but she's still undergoing surgery. You can wait in the room." I thanked her and ran to the elevator. It seemed like forever before the doors opened and I was jogging down the hall looking for room 340. When I found it, I walked in and started pacing the room. "Sir, you can't be in here." I looked at the door and saw a nurse. "I'm Nick Groff and my daughter, (Y/N), is in surgery. I was told I could wait in here." The nurse's face turned from one of sternness to a look of sadness and pain. "What?" "Sir, I'm so sorry." I looked at her in confusion. "What are you talking about?" She sighed. "(Y/N) didn't make it through surgery." I stared at her. "W-what?" I asked in disbelief while taking a seat. "I'm so sorry, sir." She whispered before leaving the room. I stared down at my hands. My mind was racing but at the same time I couldn't think. It was in that moment that my world was shattered. I sobbed into my hands. I felt my phone start to vibrate in my pocket. I wiped my eyes and pulled out my phone. Without bothering to check the caller ID, I answered. "Hello?" "Dude you'll never, wait are you crying?" I sniffed and wiped my nose. "Listen Zak, now isn't really the best time." "Dude, what happened. Where are you?" I sighed. "I'm in the hospital." "Oh my god! Dude which hospital, I'm on my way. You okay?" "I'm not hurt. It's (Y/N)." I heard Zak gasp a little. He was (Y/N)'s godfather and they were incredibly close. "What happened? Is she okay?" I felt myself start to choke up. "She was in an accident and..." I started sobbing again. "She didn't make it through surgery." I heard Zak drop the phone before he fumbled to pick it back up. "Dude, I'm so sorry. Oh god, okay. I'm gonna call Aaron and we are gonna pick you up. Just hang in there for a few more minutes." I couldn't find the energy to speak so I simply nodded. I hung up and put my phone on the table before staring at the empty bed beside me. "I'm so sorry, (Y/N). I'm so sorry."
******End Flashback*******
I was pulled out of my thoughts by the sound of the doorbell ringing. I wiped my eyes and stood up. I opened the door and saw Zak, Aaron, Billy, and Jay standing on the front porch carrying both flowers and investigation equipment. None of us said anything; I simply opened the door, let the guys in, and then shut the door. They went around the house and set the equipment up before reconvening at the kitchen table. "Hey man, are you sure you want to do this?" Zak asked carefully. "Yeah, I'm sure." He gave me a reassuring smile before we all took a seat at the table, leaving one spot open- (Y/N)'s spot. Billy set up the paranormal puck and gave me a nod. "(Y/N), are you here?" Billy typed in the phrase and pressed enter. I chewed on the inside of my cheek and prayed desperately for a response. "Hey." That one word had me soaring with excitement. "Hey baby. I've got uncle Zak and Aaron here along with Billy and Jay. Can you see them?" I asked desperately. Billy typed quietly before pressing enter. "Yes. See. Family." I felt my eyes start to tear up. Zak put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "Can we switch to the spirit box? I want to hear her voice." "Yeah." Billy put the puck away and Zak set the spirit box on the table. "(Y/N), do you have something to say for us?" I clenched and I clenched my fist as I waited. "I'm sorry." It was her. That was her voice and that was enough to have me break down. "No baby, I'm sorry. I promised I would protect you and I didn't." Zak rubbed my back as I started to cry into my hands. "Don't cry. I'm safe." I picked my head up and wiped my eyes. "Okay, I won't cry. Just for you, (Y/N)." I pictured her smiling and a feeling of warmth overcame me. "(Y/N), I only have one thing to ask of you. Can you please show yourself in one of the cameras in the house? I just want to see you once more." Nothing but white noise filled the room. I sighed in frustration, but a loud noise from upstairs had us all jumping out of our chairs. "Dude what was that?" Aaron asked. We all looked at each other before scrambling out of our chairs and up the stairs. We all went to (Y/N)'s room but everything seemed untouched. "Dude, maybe she made that noise to get us up here. Maybe she's trying to tell us something." Aaron questioned. My eyes widened in realization. "Check the cameras." I said to Jay. He caught on and walked over to the camera. He rewinded the footage but stopped after a few seconds. "Nick, you have to see this." He whispered. I walked over and looked at the tiny screen. He pressed play and I watched as a shadow passed in front of the camera." I let out a small laugh. "Thank you, (Y/N). Thank you so much." At that moment, I felt a coldness envelope my hand. I jumped back a little but quickly went back and grabbed my digital recorder. "(Y/N), I want you to know that I love you and I will always love you." And just as quick as it came, the coldness was gone. We didn't receive anything else the whole night. Eventually, the guys left but I stayed up and listened to the recordings. I fast forwarded to the moment I felt the cold and listened as hard as I could. I heard a faint whisper so I rewinded it and listened a few more times before realizing what it was saying- "I love you."
