This is a disability au. Mitch is mute and Scott is in a wheelchair.
I don't think there will be many trigger warnings in this book besides typical bullying and a sad story on Scott's part but like usual I'll put them at the start of every chapter if there does happen to be any.
Kirstie writing to Mitch will be in bold, Mitch will be italic.

we're getting a new student today
Mitch blinks a few times as he looks up at his best friend, Kirstie.
Kirstie smiles at him, and then bends down to write on the note again. Since Mitch is mute, writing on paper and/or texting is how Mitch communicates with people at school, since most of them don't know sign language. Mitch doesn't mind though.
I heard that he's also disabled, maybe you can make friends with him?
Mitch rolls his eyes and then he grabs Kirstie's pen to write with.
just because he's disabled doesn't mean we'll get along, that's not how it works Kirstie
I know but maybe you two will bond over your disabilities
knowing my luck this guy will hate my guts like everybody else in this school
Kirstie frowns as she looks over at Mitch and then shakes her head, before walking over and sitting down in her assigned seat.
Class starts, and the new kid doesn't enter class until ten minutes after it starts.
"There you are, Mr. Hoying. I was beginning to worry about you,"
Mitch looks over and his eyes widen when he sees that the new kid is in a wheelchair. He knows that Kirstie said that he would have a disability but he didn't think it would be this.
"Sorry ma'am. I'm... still getting used to the school," the blonde mumbles shyly.
"That's alright. Why don't you sit on the end there, next to Mr. Grassi," Mrs. Penny tells him.
Scott looks over and is relieved when he sees that there are tables for two people each, rather than desks. Scott hates those desks. He wheels himself over to where Mrs. Penny had pointed out for him. He grabs the chair and pushes it out of the way.
Mitch grabs his stuff and moves it out of the way so Scott can have more room.
"Everybody, this is our new student. His name is Scott, and I expect that you treat him with respect and help him around if he needs any help. There will be consequences if I see any bullying, understood?" Mrs. Penny says, giving Scott a reassuring smile.
Mitch takes out a piece of paper and starts writing on it, and then passes it to Scott.
I'm Mitch, I can't talk. I use pen and paper to communicate but I'll try to help in any way I can :)
Scott looks over at Mitch and doesn't say anything, though he does give him a little nod.
Mitch just assumes that he's shy so he doesn't push any further.
Scott seems nice, maybe this will be another opportunity for Mitch to make a friend.
