When Mitch walked into school the next day, he was confused as to why people were staring at him. He was sure that the assembly that Mr. Greene put on helped so why were people staring at him again?
"I knew it was a lie,"
Mitch blinks a few times as he look up and sees Austin standing in front of him.
"You're a fucking fake," Austin snaps. "All this time you could talk, hm? You just wanted attention..."
Mitch's eyes widen and he quickly shakes his head.
"And now everybody in this school knows the truth about you," Austin snarls.
Mitch opens his mouth but then quickly closes it. He tries to back away but Austin quickly grabs him and slams him against the lockers harshly.
"We're not finished here," Austin growls as he glares at Mitch.
"Hey! Leave him alone,"
Austin looks over and raises his eyebrows when he sees Scott wheeling up to them. "Ah, Scott..."
"Let go of him," Scott warns as he looks up at Austin. "Now..."
"Haven't you heard?" Austin asks, his grip tightening on Mitch. "Your little boyfriend is a fake."
"What are you talking about?" Scott asks, frowning.
"He's been lying to you this whole time. I bet you two bonded over the fact that you both had disabilities and now the truth has come out that he's been able to talk this whole time," Austin says.
"And, where did you hear that from?" Scott asks.
"Avi told us last night, said he talked and the way he reacted seemed like he didn't want anyone to know," Austin says. "Which I think is a pretty shitty thing to do if you ask me."
"No, you big idiot... the way he reacted is because he hasn't spoken since he was a kid," Scott snaps. "You're really believing that someone like Mitch would lie about not being able to talk?"
Mitch's eyes begin to water up as he stares at Scott. He was so wrong about Scott not being able to protect him because here he is standing up for him and protecting him from a bully.
"I may not have known Mitch a long time but I know him well enough to know that he would never do something like that," Scott says. "Now don't make me say it again... let go of him."
Austin laughs and shakes his head. "What are you going to do about it, wheelchair?"
Scott glares at him and then he wheels up to him and pushes him away from Mitch with his hands, causing Austin to almost fall over but unfortunately Scott is only strong enough to push him away from Mitch but as long as Austin is away from Mitch, he doesn't care.
Mitch's eyes widen with shock, shocked that Scott would do something like that.
"What's going on over here?"
Scott looks over and freezes when he sees Mr. Greene walking up to them.
"Did you just see what Hoying did, Mr. Greene? He pushed me!" Austin exclaims.
"Don't try to make yourself seem innocent. I heard what you were saying to these two. I thought I made myself clear in the assembly yesterday that there will be no more bullying allowed in this school,"
"But, Sir! Mitch deserved it. He's been lying to us the whole time about not being able to talk..."
"Mitch, is this true?" Mr. Greene asks calmly, turning to Mitch.
Mitch shakes his head and then he pulls his notebook out from his bag.
No, Sir. It's not true. I haven't spoken since I was a little kid. I spoke for the first time yesterday when I was being cornered by Avi in the bathroom. I told him no. I did lose the ability to speak when I was younger but my doctor said there was a high chance that I would be able to speak again if I really tried. I would never lie about something like this.
"Austin, who told you that Mitch had lied about his disability?" Mr. Greene asks.
"Avi did," Austin says. "He told us that he spoke yesterday..."
Mr. Green shakes his head.
"Sir, Mitch broke up with Avi after what happened with the pictures leaking. Of course Avi would find an excuse to try and hurt Mitch for breaking up with him. He's angry and jealous and possessive..." Scott begins. "He won't leave Mitch alone even though Mitch has asked him multiple times."
"Thank you, Scott. I will be having a word with him later. You, Austin... follow me," Mr. Greene says.
"What, why?" Austin asks, crossing his arms against his chest.
"We need to have a little chat about not bullying others," Mr. Greene says. "Follow me."
Austin glares at Scott and harshly pushes past Mitch before following Mr. Greene down the hallway.
Mitch frowns and rubs his arm where Austin pushed him, and watches as Austin walks away.
Scott sighs in relief and looks up at Mitch. "Are you okay?"
Mitch immediately bends down and hugs Scott tightly, surprising Scott.
"Oh," Scott chuckles and hugs Mitch back. "So, I'm taking that as a yes...?"
Mitch pulls away from the hug and then he gently kisses Scott's cheek before pulling away.
I can't believe you did that for me. You could have gotten in trouble.
"I know but... you're my boyfriend now, aren't you? I may be in a wheelchair but that won't stop me from protecting people that I care about," Scott says. He reaches up to grab Mitch's hand.
Mitch grins and takes Scott's hand and holds onto it.
Mitch looks up and is relieved when he sees that people are no longer staring at him. He hates having attention like that on him and he's grateful that the school is finally doing something about it.
"What did I miss?"
Mitch looks over and smiles when he sees Kirstie walking up to them.
"Ah, you just missed it," Scott chuckles as he looks up at Kirstie.
"What do you mean?" Kirstie asks as she raises her eyebrows. "I actually missed something?"
Avi started a rumor about me, Austin tried beating me up because of it.
"What?" Kirstie scoffs. "Where is Avi? I'm gonna beat the shit out of that asshole."
Mitch's eyes widen but he's not surprised. Kirstie has made it clear that she doesn't like Avi and he definitely appreciates that she sticks up for him whenever Avi is around.
"Kirstin!" Scott warns. "Don't say that, it's already been taken care of. Mr. Greene knows what's going on and he actually just took Austin to the principal's office."
"Really?" Kirstie asks, a little surprised. "What happened?"
Scott pushed Austin! It was wild but my man stood up for me and saved me from getting bullied.
"Aw!" Kirstie squeals. "That's so cute. I wish I could have been there to see you push someone, Scott."
Scott rolls his eyes. "Can we get to class now before we're late?" He asks.
Mom is going to kill me if I'm late for anymore classes.
Kirstie giggles and starts pushing Scott so Mitch can hold Scott's hand while he walks next to him. She thinks it's adorable that Mitch still wants to hold Scott's hand even when he's in a wheelchair.
