I'm having a party this Saturday.
Scott blinks a few times when he sees the note Mitch has given him, and then he looks over at Mitch. "I told I'm not allowed to go anywhere without my aunt,"
She can come with you.
Scott scoffs and shakes his head. "No thanks, she's already on me all the time. I can't even wheel down the ramp without her watching me. I mean... a ramp specifically made for me and she still freaks out. I don't need to be a party with her, watching my like a hawk," he mumbles.
Mitch bites his lip, trying to think of more ways to convince Scott to come.
Tell her that my mom will be there, which she will be. My mom will be watching us all night and she'll be there if you need anything. My mom is very trustworthy. Will you come?
Scott sighs and shakes his head. "Parties aren't my thing,"
Silly me. It's not really a party. Just a couple of people are coming over for my birthday.
Scott bites his lip nervously as he thinks. "I'll have to talk to my aunt about it," he mumbles.
Mitch nods, and gives Scott a smile before returning to his homework.
Mitch hopes that this party will work out. Even though he's hardly known Scott for a week. He's interested in the boy and wants to know more about him. He seems sweet but whatever happened to him obviously messed him up and made him not trust others which makes Mitch very sad.
I think Scott might be coming to the party!
Kirstie smiles as soon as she sees the note Mitch has given her, when they're at lunch.
"That's great! I hope he comes and opens up to you more,"
Did you talk to anyone else about the party? Not too many I hope.
Kirstie chuckles. "Actually, yes. I have a few friends that said they'll come. They're all in choir so they're really nice and I think you'll like them. Tori and Todrick will be coming. I'm going to talk to Kevin later. He's like the nicest person ever so I think he'll come and hang out with us, and he has a friend named Avi who has like this really deep voice. That should be enough," she says.
Mitch smiles and his eyes light up. He's actually going to have a party? His first ever party.
Well "party". It's not technically a party but in his mind it is.
After school, Mitch goes to Scott's house to work on some finishing touches on their poster. They're pretty much done at this point but Mitch wants to make sure that everything is perfect, like he always does. Mitch never finishes a school project without triple checking everything.
"Hi Mitch, come on in,"
Mitch smiles at Claire and walks inside, he looks around for a second before looking back at Scott's aunt.
"Scott is just in his room, why don't you let him know that you're here while I get drinks?" Claire suggests.
Mitch nods and then skips to Scott's bedroom. The door is shut but Mitch knocks on it. He knocks again when he doesn't get a response. Mitch frowns and then he slowly pushes the door open and walks in.
No sign of Scott which Mitch finds interesting.
Mitch looks around without thinking. He's never been in Scott's room before. It's totally normal. And then he walks over to the pictures. He sees a few pictures of Scott with whom he assumes is various family members. One picture appears to be of Scott and his parents before he had a wheelchair.
"It's not nice to snoop through people's personal belongings,"
Mitch jumps at the sound of Scott's voice. He looks over and sees that Scott had just come out of the connected bathroom in his room. Mitch turns and points at the picture.
Scott sighs. "Those are my parents, now let's go," he snaps before wheeling out of his bedroom.
Mitch frowns and follows him to the living room.
"You look upset," Claire says when she sees Scott.
"I'm fine," Scott mumbles as he takes one of the drinks.
Claire stares at him for a moment and then she sets the other drink down on the coffee table. "Okay. Mitch, may I speak to you for a second," she says before going to the kitchen.
Mitch frowns but follows her anyway.
Claire turns and looks at him. "What happened? What's got Scott so upset?"
Mitch decided to use sign language since he didn't have pen and paper.
I was just looking at the pictures on Scott's dresser.
"That was your first mistake," Claire says, shaking her head. "Those are pictures of our family and Scott doesn't like to talk about them so don't go asking questions about them."
Mitch frowns.
But why?
"There's a lot you don't know about Scott, okay? He's been through a lot in his life. Don't ask him about his wheelchair. Don't ask him about family," Claire warns. "I'm very protective of my nephew and I won't hesitate to kick you out if you make him upset. Now go on, go finish your project."
Mitch's eyes widen with slight fear and he rushes back to the living room as fast as he can. He sits down on the couch next to Scott and takes a deep breath, trying to forget what just happened. He looks over and blinks a few times when he sees that Scott is staring at him with a raised eyebrow.
"I told you Aunt Claire was protective of me,"
"With good reason!"
"Aunt Claire!" Scott warns before rolling his eyes.
Mitch smiles a little and then he scoots closer to the table to get a better look at their poster.
"Do you think we'll get an A?"
Mitch nods.
Absolutely. Our poster is a masterpiece!
"Um, I don't know what you just said," Scott said.
Mitch blushes and then he pulls out his notebook and a pen.
We're definitely getting an A. We did everything we were supposed to do. The teacher will love it.
"I just don't want the teachers to think I'm lazy just because I'm in a wheelchair. I actually work,"
Mitch frowns as he looks over at Scott.
Why would they think you're lazy?
"Because... it's complicated. Teachers like to judge you,"
Mitch shakes his head.
I will make sure to let the teacher know that you did work. We worked together and got it done.
Scott takes a deep breath and slowly nods. "Thanks," he mumbles.
Mitch smiles.
So, about my party?
Scott sighs. "My Aunt insists on going with me. She doesn't know your mom that well so she wants to see for herself if she's trustworthy. But I can go," he says.
Mitch claps excitedly, earning a small smile from Scott.
Now Mitch is really looking forward to this party.
