“Jake……..” I interrupted, grabbing their attention instantly. “I feel dizzy………….” I pretended to collapse and fell to the floor. Both the doctor and Jake rushed for help.

“Kate? Are you alright?” Jake asked nervously.

I didn’t respond. The doctor said, “Take her to the examination room. Let me examine her. It must have been weakness due to stress.”

Jake carried me to a room.

“We’re alright. You may leave.” The doctor said, signaling Jake to leave. The doctor then flashed a torch at my eyes to check my pupils.

I made sure that the doctor and I were alone in the room. “I’m okay.” I instantly rose up.

“What is happening?” The doctor asked, confused.

“I’m sorry doctor. I had to fake fainting to talk to you in private. I wanted to discuss about Jane’s baby. Is the baby okay?”

“Even I was surprised at first that a baby had survived for so long under these circumstances. We had lost all our hope. She is lucky to have been rescued in time. But you should ensure she doesn’t repeat it. Her body has lost much blood and if she doesn’t take care of her health now, her body would fail to raise a child.”

“I’m sure that won’t happen again. I’ll not let that happen.”

“Good. But why did you have to pretend?”

“Jake doesn’t know yet. Jane doesn’t want him to know. Can you keep a little secret? Please tell him there was an error. And of course, I hope you understand this news shouldn’t slip in the press at any cost.”

“I would never do that. The Parkers are the trustees of this hospital. I know how sensitive the issue is.  Please feel free to contact me in case of emergency. I’m going to write down Dr. Phil’s number. He’s the best gynecologist. Tell him I sent you.”

“Thank you, doctor.” As he escorted me out, I could see Jake waiting impatiently outside.

“Why are you walking? How are you feeling now? You should be resting right now.” Jake instantly held me to support me.

“I’m ok. It was a minor panic attack. The doc gave me some pills. They seem to have worked real fast.”

“Still, I don’t want to take any chances. You should go home.” Jake said seriously.

“No, I want to stay here with Jane.” But any arguing was useless. Jake didn’t listen to anyone once he decided to do something.

So I was shoved in a car that was strictly instructed to drive me straight home. I hated to go. I wanted to be with Jane right now. Jake had promised me she’d be discharged soon and they both would come home too.

By the time I reached home, it was midnight. It was pitch dark, only moonlight. While I was walking my way to the door on the gravelly path, my heel broke and I slipped into someone’s arms.
