After two restless and disturbed days, when we finally returned, I called Jane and asked her to meet me for breakfast. Jane was reluctant, but I didn’t leave her much of a choice. I sat alone in the lonely parlor waiting for Jane. I heard the sound of high heels clanking up against the stairs. I took in a deep breath and prepared myself for the confrontation. I was not going to give up today. Today I was not leaving without answers.
Jane came down and sat down in front of me, avoiding eye contact, again. “I left David with the nanny. He’s sleeping anyway so he won’t know I’m away. So how was the trip?”
“Quite informative and revealing” I muttered coldly.
She laughed awkwardly.
“Let’s not beat around the bush here. I don’t want to be hard on you but lying won’t help Jane. Just please tell me who is Angela.”
Jane’s expression changed to a more serious composure. “She was Alex’s ex……..” She took in a deep breath as I waited for her to complete. “Ex- fiancée”
I looked up surprised.
“Then what happened…….?”
“Angela and Alex knew each other from back in middle school and by the time they made it to high school, they were practically inseparable. We weren’t really rich back then so we were sent to the community school just like everyone else. Then dad hit a deal and we became overnight billionaires and we were forced to leave our roots behind. We shifted to here in Beverly Hills, but Alex left his heart in North Carolina. They wrote letters to each other for a couple of months but one day Angela turned up uninvited. She had eloped with Alex and they both wanted to get married. But the money and the power had blinded dad and he considered Angie’s status ‘too low’ for us. He tried his best to separate them but he really couldn’t do much. Finally, he did something he shouldn’t have. He called up Angela and told her Alex was dead. Angela couldn’t take in the news and committed suicide that very night.”
I felt myself choking at this point. Jane was teary eyed too.
“When the news hit Alex, he lost his mental balance and tried many attempts to commit suicide. He had lost the will to live. We had to send him to a hospital for two years, gave his every anti-depressant possible, but nothing really helped. I’m sure dad didn’t intend to do this. But the guilt ate him up from inside. He was found dead with a gun beside him.” Jane eyes were overflowing with tears. I hugged her.
“I’m so sorry.”
“So finally we found a doctor who specialized in using hypnotism to forget trauma. After months of therapy, Angela was finally washed out of Alex’s mind. I thought I had erased Angela from his mind completely.”
“But Angela isn’t gone. She’s still here with Alex. I can feel her. And why has everyone been referring me as Angela lately?”
“I didn’t tell you about that. You both look……a tad bit similar.”
“How much?”
“Well….I didn’t think I need this but here.” She handed me a picture. I looked at it closely and received the biggest shock of my life. It was like looking into a mirror. She had my eyes, my face……we looked exactly the same, except she had lovely red locks and was a prettier version of me.
I buried my face in my hands. It was way too much to take in. Even though the room was pretty empty, I felt difficult to breathe.
“So you’re telling me Alex fell in love with me just because I am a reflection of the girl he really loved?” I felt defeated, cheated and helpless at the same time.
“It’s not like that. I don’t know. I went and talked to the doctor when you mentioned to me about Angela. The doctor thinks maybe the accident has triggered some memories back into Alex’s brain. But she told me to bring him back for another sitting and everything would be normal.”
“Nothing can be normal now. You ruined everything Jane. Why didn’t you tell me this before?”
“I tried but I never really thought it would go this far. I thought Angela was dead and buried.”
“I guess that’s why Jake was after me too, right? I, I mean Angela, was the only way to control Alex after all.” Tears started escaping my eyes. My whole world was built on a lie. Alex didn’t love me. He loved his faint memory of Angela. I didn’t deserve his love. He needed to know the truth.
