Chapter 44

It was 6 PM but there was still no sign of Alex. The watchman finally told me. "We're closing up. Please come tomorrow."

"Please, please......my boyfriend would be here any moment. Five minutes please?"

"No ma'am. I'm afraid you'll have to come tomorrow."

The office closed but Alex didn’t turn up. I rang him up several times but his cell was unreachable. I walked home dejectedly. By the time I was home, my eyeliner was run down from all the tears. Why would Alex do this? He knew how special this day was to us. Maybe something important came up at work. I tried to console myself. I looked into the mirror. Damn, I look like a panda bear. I picked up a tissue and cleaned up my face. Then I decided to make myself a cup of tea to calm myself down. He would be here soon. Everything will be fine. We can always register tomorrow. I needed to distract myself so I put on the TV. Suddenly the phone rang. I rushed to the phone. “Hey baby, where’ve you been? You got me so worried…………….”

“Is this Alex Parker’s house?” Someone spoke, breaking my line of thoughts.

“Yes.” I replied, confused.

“Who am I speaking to?” A voice came from the other end of the line.

“I’m Katy……Katherine, Alex’s fiancée.”

“There’s some bad news for you, maam. This is Inspector Robert from the LA Police. Please come to the City Hospital as soon as possible.”

“Wait, what happened? Is Alex alright?” I got worried.

“He was shot down outside the firm. He is alive, but his condition is critical. We need you here to sign some papers and there are some things we need to discuss with you.”

I froze. I put down the phone. Tears broke me down and I fell to the floor. Every part of my body felt shattered into a thousand pieces. I felt as if it was impossible to get up. The pain had paralyzed my entire body. He needs you right now. A voice inside me gave me the strength to get to my feet. I ran down to the street. I didn’t have time to wait for a cab. I stood in the middle of the road, begging desperately for a ride. Finally, a cab stopped. I got in.

“Please drive faster, it’s an emergency.” I told the driver.

“Don’t stop for the light, we can make it.” I told the driver to skip the red light. “I’ll pay you double.”

The driver followed my instructions. In the middle of the way, another car came from the opposite direction and crashed into us. It happened so fast I couldn’t make out anything. Last thing I remember, I was lying on the road with my head bleeding and glass pieces embedded in my skin. “Alex……………..” I murmured. Night closed in on me.
