"Hey, you alright?"

I opened my eyes. I realized that I was in a car. Jake was in the driver’s seat. He was wounded on the head. Blood was dripping down his forehead, onto the expensive leather car cover. I got up panicking.

"What happened to you? Are you alright?" I ran short of breath.

"I’m alright, do you remember anything that happened?"

"No."

"Good."

"Aren’t you gonna tell me?"

"Those guys….they were after you….I beat them up pretty hard…I couldn’t stop myself….I could’ve almost killed them…But a watchman stopped me….They are arrested probably by now……" He gritted his teeth.

"Okay…But what were you doing there?"

He lost his anger and looked nervous. He started fumbling for words. "I…um…I was nearby…saw you running….."

"I never saw you there. You’re not telling me the truth, are you?"

"That’s the way it happened." He said coldly. Suddenly my attention was diverted on the bruise on his forehead. I tore off a piece from my top and tied it around his forehead.

"I’m taking you to the hospital and I’m driving."

"No way!" He seemed pretty amused by the idea.

"Or I’m getting off the car."

"Okay, okay here have the keys."

Of course he couldn’t let me walk alone here. I couldn’t help but smile triumphantly. As we were driving, Jake’s phone buzzed. It was Stacy. Who else could it be to ruin the perfect moment? "I’m sorry I need to take this." Jake muttered.

"Hey Stace…..No, I wasn’t busy….just on way to your house"

After seeing the doc, we drove to my, rather, Jake’s girlfriend’s house. He knocked the door.

"Oh baby, where were you?" She hugged him. "You’re with him" She said coldly looking at me.

"Umm yeah. I bumped into her on the way, so decided to give her a ride home." Jake lied.

"What happened to your head?" She said with fake care, probably thinking about her manicure while placing her fingers on his forehead. "Nothing. A little accident." He lied again, but his eyes were filled with anger this time as he thought about the incident. She pulled him into the bedroom. Of course the bedroom was "off-limits" for me. I sighed and went to the terrace.

I spent most of the evening on the terrace, thinking what was happening to me. Why Jake was so protective of me? Is it what all guys do for girlfriend’s sisters? And why did I lose my calm when I saw him bleeding? There’s nothing to think upon. It’s pretty normal. I told myself. Don’t make an issue out of it.

"Hey, hope I didn’t disturb you." Suddenly Jake’s voice broke my line of thoughts. It was too dark so we couldn’t see each other. "Umm no, is Stacy with you?" I asked. "No I bid her goodnight, came here to say bye to you. What are you doing by the way?" He sat beside me on the terrace railing.

"Just looking at the stars, thinking about destiny." Strong cold winds began to blow. I shivered. Even Alex’s jacket couldn’t save me from this cold. He came closer. There was only an inch gap between us now. "You can have my jacket, its warmer." "No I’m fine, really." He took his jacket off anyway and wrapped around me. "I’m used to this weather." He said.

We talked for what seemed like an eternity that night. Suddenly someone honked the car from below. It was Alex.

"Hey bro, think I need to pick you up every day from your girlfriend’s house? Where are you when dad needs you?"

"Hi Alex" I said.

"Oh I didn’t realize it was you Kate" He turned his gaze at me, looking sharply at my new jacket. He seemed pretty hurt that I had taken off his jacket and was sitting with Jake. I gave Alex’s jacket to Jake. "I gotta go, goodnight" He whispered into my ear. "Goodnight." They drove off, leaving me in darkness again.

I came downstairs, only to meet angry Stacey. She stopped me from entering.

"Hey, you b*tch. Don’t think I don’t see what you’re doing. The torn off shirt, Jake’s jacket on. Think you can steal him from me, ugly duckling? In your dreams. He’s my man. You whore!" She shut the door, not letting me in. I flopped down on the floor, tears filled in my eyes. She was right. I was a whore. It was wrong of me to let Jake come close to me. I had to stop all friendship with the Parkers.

Next evening, when Jake came, I avoided him or actually ignored him. He tried to talk to me many times but I left the room. Stacy was pleased. Finally Jake gave up, looking hurt. He and Stacy were probably going out on a date or something. Jake had planned it all. I was happy that Stacy and him were together again. He waited for nearly two hours, when Stacy finally came out saying "I’m not going anywhere with you. This dress you brought for me sucks."

"I’m sorry. Why don’t you wear something else?"

"No you’ve spoiled my mood. I’m not going now."

"But babe, I had it all booked."

"As if I care? Take that worthless Kate with you." She said slamming the door.

"But it’s my birthday babe." He muttered silently. I felt bad for him. No one deserved to be treated that way, not on their birthday. I had to make it up to him. And Stacy wanted me to go too. I picked up the dress thrown on the floor. It was a pretty, short white dress. The most beautiful thing I’d ever worn. I felt perfect in that dress.

When I came out, he was sitting on the couch, his head in his hands, sad. "I’m ready" I said cheerfully.

"Huh? I didn’t know you wanted to go"

"Of course I want to."

"You look beautiful " He said, looking awed. I blushed.

He led me to the car, excited.

"Where to, miss?" He said.

"To the stars." I said laughing.
