CHAPTER 50

The doorbell rang suddenly. Jake gave a moan and retreated. “Why did I dismiss the staff today? Be right back, love.” He gave me a quick kiss and went outside. I dizzily looked up and realized what I was doing. This is not right. It’s moving all too fast. I’m drunk. I don’t want this to be a mere attraction. When that special moment comes, it’s got to be love.

I quickly locked my door up and decided to sleep. I was not in position to make any decisions right now.

I heard a knock at the door next morning. It was Jake.

“Good morning love,” he kissed my cheek, “I made breakfast.” He brought a tray inside.

“In bed?” I asked puzzled.

“You’re my princess.”

I forced a smile.

“About yesterday……..I’m so sorry. It was my lawyer. He had some important papers he needed me to sign. But I told everyone not to disturb me at home again. I just want to spend some time with you. Now where were we?” He came closer.

“Wait. I wanted to thank you for yesterday even though I don’t remember much. It was a beautiful night.”

He smiled and two little dimples appeared on his cheeks.

“Could I get some coffee? I feel so hung over. I’m not drinking again.” I chuckled.

It was a good excuse to get him out of the room. I decided to read the newspaper. Jake immediately snatched it away from me. “Why are you looking for answers in a piece of paper when I’m right here?”He held my hand and pressed it against his cheek. “You can trust me. I’m sorry if I was rushing things yesterday.”

“I like you Jake, I really do, but I want it to be much more. Please be patient with me.”

“Patient? Really?” He picked up a glass and slammed it to the floor. It broke into a thousand pieces. “I’ve been really patient but you look like you’re not even trying.”

He pulled me in and punched the wall next to me. A slight mistake and it would’ve landed on my skull. Or maybe I was the target. “You love me. That’s all you need to know.”

I looked at him bewildered. All that fake innocence had left his face and I saw a monster in front of me. I felt scared of him. A tear went down my cheek.

“I’m sorry. I should be leaving.” I choked.

“Katy…..Katy…I’m sorry………” He followed me. I ignored him, making my way out. “Listen to me; I’ve been really worked up lately. Just stay. Please. Give me one last chance; I just lose my temper sometimes.”

“It just feels like you’re hiding something from me. Like there’s a missing piece in the puzzle.” I said between sobs.

I decided to forgive him this time. It must be hard on him too.  We decided to start again.

Jake wanted to take me out for a movie. It was a nice way to spend some time together without feeling uncomfortable. I felt safer to be with him in public, with people around us. And, we didn’t have to sit awkwardly silent, looking for common topics of interests to talk about.

As Jake and I seated ourselves, he squeezed my hand slightly and looked straight into my eyes. I forced a smile.

Suddenly I felt a flashlight hitting my face directly. I raised up a hand to cover up my face. Two shadows came walking towards us, closer and closer. Finally when they seated themselves beside me, I casually glanced at them. One look and everything started coming back to me. All the painful memories I had managed to bury deep beneath, in a place even I couldn’t reach, came flooding in. My head started aching and I felt a sudden rush of dizziness and nausea. I tried to hold on to the chair for support but I fell down.

Has Katy regained her memory? What will she do now? Who were those two figures? Find out in the next chapter!
