I extended my hand to let him put the ring on. “It’s nothing fancy you know.” He looked at the ring. “It was my mom’s. Dad proposed to her with this ring. They were pretty broke at that time so it’s not that expensive. They never felt the need to replace it. It was very special to them. I want you to have it. So you’ll always have a piece of me, whether I remain or not.”

I put a finger on his lips. “Don’t you dare even think that.”

I felt my heart skip a beat as he slipped the thin, platinum band on my finger. The word “PARKER” was carved on it neatly.

“It’s perfect.” I said, through tears.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” He asked me.

“It’s the only thing I want. How soon can we get married?” I eyed him playfully.

“How about we go to the court after I return from work? I want to make you mine as soon as possible. We can have a more traditional celebration in the church when Jane returns. Let’s get married legally till then.” He raised me in his arms and carried me to bed.

“Sure.”

For the first time in our lives, everything seemed alright. I wanted to tell Jane everything but her stupid cell didn’t catch network in that exotic island.

The next morning, I woke up with Alex kissing me. “Good morning, beautiful.” He was already dressed up for work. I wanted to rip through his clothes and make love to him that very moment. We were engaged, right? But I controlled myself. Save it for tonight. You have waited so long. What are a couple more hours? I told myself. I kissed him back.

“Today’s breakfast on me. I have made your favorite. I’ll meet you at the court at 4. Got to go. Love you.” He left the room.

“I love you too.” I murmured, sleepily.

Five minutes later, I finally got up. After brushing my teeth, I went to the kitchen. The table was laid out really well. There was a red roses bouquet lying on the middle. A small card read:

‘Thank you for giving me the greatest gift ever. Can’t wait to marry you, Mrs. Parker.

Love,

 Alex.’

I couldn’t help but smile. Mrs. Katherine Parker? Sounded a bit weird but I could get used to that. The rest of the day was spent pampering myself and drooling over my new ring. I wanted to look special for him tonight.

I put on a white dress, tied my hair up in a formal up do just to play the part of the bride and hired a taxi around 4. It was around a quarter past four when I reached the court. Alex wasn’t there yet. Making me wait? I hate him so much. I can’t wait anymore. I sat down in the waiting room, my eyes glued expectantly at door, occasionally checking the wall clock.
