“So Katy, tell me more about yourself.”

“I completed my college and right now I’m waitressing at a hotel. My life’s pretty magical. What about you?”

“Trust me, my life is far less interesting for you.”

I decided to look out of the window again. There was no point in trying to have a conversation with him.

Black trees passed by like an infinitely continuous stretch of darkness. That was one of the things I like about this part of the city. The forest, the calm, the silence……….suddenly the car bumped on a speed breaker and came to a halt. I fell from my seat over into Chris’ lap. His grey eyes met mine and he silently looked at me as I looked at him. My hair fell all over my face due to the air from the heater. He gently pushed my hair behind my ear. I got up awkwardly.

“I should have known I would need seat belt with a driver like you.”

“Oh, just when I thought my magic was working on you, you have to say something stupid to spoil the moment.”

I got out and began walking. I heard him following me.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“It’s called looking for help.”

“So you think we can find help in the middle of nowhere?”

“At least I’m trying.” I walked even faster. My leg twisted against the stony road and I fell down.

He ran to see me. “Are you alright?”

“I think I broke my heels.” I said, fumbling for my Louis Vuittons. I had bought them at a clearance sale. They were like the best shoes in my closet. Could did day go any worse?

“Great.” He said, sarcastically. He came closer.

“What are you doing?” I said, alarmed.

“What do you think I’m doing?” He lifted me into his arms and began carrying me to his car. I felt warm against his body and I don’t really remember when I fell asleep after that.

When I woke up, I was in my bed, covered in my blanket. Did Chris drop me off? Thank god I had explained my address to him long before passing out.

I heard the key move in the lock. Meg came inside stumbling, drunk, her lipstick smudged and a bra strap broken. She flopped down on the couch beside me. Four hours later she finally regained consciousness. I handed her a cup of coffee.

“Don’t you want to know where I was? Daniel…….he was divine. And the s*x was awesome too.” She put her head over my lap.

I immediately got up.

“Are you mad?” Meg asked.

“Do you really care?”

“I’m sorry I left you at the party.”

“No it’s not about that. It’s about you sleeping around with men ten years older than you who are just looking for one night out. And there’s Brian living right across the hallway, who adores you. I can see it in his eyes. You have a second chance at love. Not everyone gets it Meg.”

“You’re right. I like Brian and I want to give this a chance. But I don’t want anyone to get so close to me again. I don’t want to feel vulnerable again. So I try to keep it physical.”

“You’ve got to stop running away.”

“So do you. Give a chance, if not to love, at least to life. You’ve got to breathe.” Meg replied. I looked down hesitatingly.

“I’ve got a 3:00 pm appointment at Macy’s. I want my roots retouched. Why don’t you come along?” She finally asked me.

It wasn’t a bad idea. Haircuts are a good change. A new look, a new beginning. And I had neglected my locks for long enough to let them turn into this awkward-length weirdness. My hair badly needed a haircut.

“Hi, my friend Katy here would like a new look.” Meg told the hair dresser.

“Do you have anything specific in mind?” The girl asked me.

“No, not really.”

“May I suggest then? How about going red? It’s on trend on the runways and it would really bring out the amber in your eyes.”

I choked.

“I need some time alone.” I told Meg. “Can you spend the night at Brian’s? He’s coming tonight right?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.” I went out in the street, trying my best to control the tears. I put on ‘The Notebook’ on Netflix and drowned my sorrows in an extra, extra large tub of strawberry ice cream. Seeing Noah and Allie made me wonder where the love is. When the last time you saw two people grow old together, perfectly in love? When was the last time you saw magic between two people even after fifty years?  Maybe that’s why such movies sell. We crave for love. We always want what we can’t have. Or maybe I was the one who didn’t deserve it.

I heard a knock at the door.

I opened the door to find Chris standing in front of me.
