It was really awkward at the breakfast table. No one had the courage to break the silence. Finally, Alex spoke.

“Uncle, Aunt….you know how much I respect you. I consider you like my parents. But what happened yesterday was unacceptable. I hope you both know what Elizabeth did. I can’t marry her.”

“Alex, that’s what your parents always wanted. Elizabeth did nothing wrong.” Mrs. Thomas spoke. “Anyway you won’t be marrying the street girl, would you?”

Alex rose up angrily. “Just because you are a dear friend of our family doesn’t give you a right to insult Katy. I’m sure if mom and dad were alive, they wouldn’t want me to marry a girl like Elizabeth.”

“Of course he would rebel. He has the dirty blood too. How could we forget he ain’t a real Parker anyway? He came from the roadside too. God knows what impure blood flows down his vessels?”

Alex froze. The cruel words of Mr. Thomas seemed to pierce through the heart. Mrs. Thomas had blatantly and brutally put forth the ugly, forbidden truth that no one had spoken in probably years.

“Mrs. Thomas, Alex had done everything to deserve the title of a Parker. He is the only one who has been managing his studies with the business from a young age. He is the one who took care of the entire family.” I spoke in his defense.

“Really? If it hadn’t been for the millions the Parker left, would he even have an identity? He has misused the kindness and charity of the Parkers. He is not the rightful heir. That’s why he has fallen for a girl of his own standards.”

”Please leave this house right now. I don’t think Alex needs to hear this.” I couldn’t let Alex put up with this anymore. I could see how pained he was at every word.

“Today was really unexpected. I’m sorry you had to hear all that because of me. Try not to over think it.” I kissed him gently on his ear, my fingers lingering on the muscles of his chest.

He pulled away. “They were right. I’m not a real Parker. I don’t deserve this wealth. Who knows where I belong?”

“You belong with me. Your mom and dad loved you. That’s why they adopted you.”

“No. Katy, you don’t understand I how feel right now. I can’t live with this burden. I feel so ashamed right now. Nothing they said was a lie. I need to prove myself.”

“Babe, you don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Your parents are proud of you.”

“I need to do this. I have to prove myself to myself. Would you still love me if I wasn’t a Parker?” He looked at me nervously.

“Of course I would. I don’t love you for your title or your wealth. I love you. All of you.” A lump built up in my throat.

“Then please let me do this. I want to give up all this wealth. I want to start afresh with a new identity, just as Alex. Will you support me?”

“If that’s what you want.”

He pulled me closer and kissed me with undying passion and I felt all my worries fade away for a while.

Will Alex and Katy be able to survive in the big city penniless? Would it affect their love? Find out in the next chapter!
