In the moonlight, all I could see were two eyes that shone brighter than the moon, only inches away from mine. Although the grip around my waist was strong, it was caressing. Cold winds blew in our direction, blowing my hair onto his face. It started drizzling mildly.
“Are you alright?” He asked, in a low voice.
“Thanks for saving me Alex. How did you catch me?”
“I was right behind you. You didn’t notice me in the dark.”
“Oh……ok.”
We hadn’t realized that the rain has shifted from drizzle to snowfall and had drenched us both.
“The weather’s looking pretty bad. Let’s go inside.” Alex murmured slowly and led the way.
I was a bit surprised that Alex didn’t wait up for me. Maybe he was still angry at me. Nevertheless, I wasn’t going to go inside so soon. It was my first snowfall of the season. I was going to enjoy it.
It felt nice, feeling each snowflake rest gently on your skin. I just wanted to lay there forever.
When the snowfall became pretty heavy, I had no choice but to go inside.
Alex was sitting in his night robe, sitting by the fireplace quietly, reading a book. He neglected my presence completely. It was almost as if I was invisible. I sneezed. Damn you, weather. This is all I was waiting for. A cold. I started shivering.
He looked up, “Are you cold?”
“No.” I replied, coldly. I didn’t want his care. If he couldn’t acknowledge my presence, why did he have to pretend to look out for me?
I started to return to my room.
“Wait. You can sit it here, by the fire. It would be warmer. Let me get you some fresh clothes and whip you a nice coffee.” He got up, immediately.
“No………STOP!!!!” I finally cracked. “I don’t need you doing stuff for me. One day you tell me you love me, the next day you seem so cold. I don’t want any favors from you.”
“This is not what it seems like…….”
I interrupted. “Really? I was better off without you in my life. Why are you playing all these games with me?”
“You think this is easy for me? To be around the girl you love, knowing you can’t have her. To want to kiss her all the time but not being able to.”
“Is it true?” I was surprised.
He looked pretty embarrassed. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that out loud.”
I was in tears. “We don’t have to do this, you know. We should tell Jake everything. This is unfair to everyone. No one is getting what they deserve. Maybe I’m not the one for Jake. He’ll find someone better.”
“I can’t do that to my brother.” Alex clenched his teeth.
“Fine. Guess what? I’m done with you. You don’t deserve my love. I was stupid to fall for you. If I can’t find love, doesn’t mean Jake shouldn’t get it either. From now, Jake will get what he deserves.” I stormed out to my room.
