ALEX’S POV
Something moved beneath me. I pulled back to see her heart suddenly started beating again. I couldn’t believe what just happened. The ECG machine started beeping normally again. I massaged her palm. “Katy? Katy? She’s alive. She has a pulse. Doctor, please see her.” The doctor rushed in. He examined Katy and then looked at me in awe. “This has never happened before. I don’t know how to explain this. She had a palpitation. A palpitation (medical term Ectopic heart beat) is an abnormal awareness of the beating of the heart, whether it is too slow, too fast, irregular, or at its normal frequency. Sometimes the heart stops beating for a few seconds. That’s one way to look at it. But what I really think saved her was you. You gave her a reason to live again and your love brought her back.”
I wanted to lean in and kiss her, but the oxygen mask over her face separated our lips. I gently whispered into her ear. “You’re back.”
She opened her lids. “Alex…..” Tears welled up in her eyes.
“Sshhh…. Relax. I’m still here. Have some rest.”
“If I close my eyes, I’m afraid I’ll lose you again.”
“That’ll never happen again. I promise.” I kissed her forehead. I sang her to sleep.
Jane came over. She was worried and panicked, escorted by two guys.
“How is Katy? Is she alright?”
I held her shoulders to calm her. “She’s fine now. Everything’s fine now.” A faint smile lined my face. “Now wouldn’t you introduce me to your friends?”
“Oh this is Harry, Katy’s friend. He was there when you called me and he got so scared, he forced me to let him accompany us.”
“Hi Harry, thanks for coming. You can meet her when she wakes up.” I waited for Jane to introduce the other friend. After a few awkward minutes, she finally continued. “And that’s Ty, I mean Tyler Davidson.” She was blushing. Wait a second. Is he her boyfriend?
“And he is-?”
“Her boyfriend.” Tyler gently kissed Jane’s cheek. She pushed him back slightly and looked at him uneasily. “Yeah. I love him brother. He’s a good guy.” I felt amused at how much nervous Jane was. I hugged her. “Whatever you want, sister.”
“Thank you so much.” Jane lit up and kissed Tyler back.
“Let’s sit in the café and grab some coffee while we wait.” Jane suggested.
“I’ll wait in the ward for Katy to wake up.” I muttered.
KATE’S POV
I tried to open my eyes but unbearably bright light entered. I had to close them again. I had been in darkness so long that the light seemed repulsive to me. Every part of my body ached. I felt disgust and pain.
“Katy? Are you up?” I heard Alex’s voice. All that pain seemed to have washed away in a second. I felt his hand stroking my palm. I smiled on the inside. I finally opened my eyes to see him sitting beside me. He looked pale and weak.
“How long have you been here?” I asked him.
“Ever since you were here.” He kissed my hand.
“How did I get here?”
“I reached home when Jake…….” His voice broke. He looked pained to even recall it.
“You don’t need to if you don’t want to. All I care about is us right now.” I whispered into his ear.
“Jake! I forgot about him. He has to pay for his crime. I’ll kill him the second I see him.” He gritted his teeth with fury.
“No, please don’t leave me now. I want you to stay. Let the police look for him.” I couldn’t afford to have him out of my sight.
I pulled him by his shirt closer to me. A revolver fell out of his pocket.
“What’s this?” I asked him, surprised.
“Nothing.” He looked uncomfortable. “I carried it as an option. If you know, I was unable to save you. I couldn’t live without you.” Tears rolled down his cheek.
I put my finger on his lips. “Don’t ever say that.”
The door opened. The doctor came in and gave me some medicines.
“You’re doing really well. You can go home in a couple of days.”
“He keeps me well.” I smiled and looked at Alex.
