Chapter 34: BOOM
After the incident, which Alice would later claim to have no memory of, the team moved on, finally making it to the side that they were supposed to be on in the first place. This side was less guarded, although more LSF were filing in as the news that there were five dead men on the roof was spreading like a virus.
"This is only going to get harder, let's go now." Redd said. "Quietly, we can't blow our cover here."
A truck pulled up, the driver inside looking half-asleep.
"That's as good a cue as any." Angel said.
Redd shot the guy in the truck, who had his window rolled down despite the cold, rainy weather. He slumped down in his seat, out of sight.
As the five people creeped forward, pressed up to the truck, a guard lazily scrolled past the heavily camoflauged people without seeing them.
"Only shoot at what you can kill..." Angel said quietly into the radio.
Angel was on point, at the spearhead of the group. Alice somehow got stuck at the back of the group. When she was sure no other LSF were in a visible position to spot them, she reached behind her, never taking her eyes off of the place she was supposed to be watching, and tapped Krew, who was behind her, on the shoulder. The tap went to Anton, Redd, Taco, until it got to Angel at the front. The team moved up quickly. No LSF were watching them, but there were enough for this to be a convention.
They scraped through, not being seen, and not having to take any LSF out of the picture. They finally arrived at the area they were originally supposed to get to.
"That took long enough." Taco said, a little too audibly.
"Shut up!" Angel hissed, as he pressed up against a wall, spotting a lone LSF investigating the yell.
As the team got down, hiding behind a series of boulders. As the guy wandered around, doubting there was anything around, but since he had nothing better to do, and he wasn't in the mood for being told off, he stuck around, looking around half-heartedly.
It was heartedly enough.
Angel snapped up, and put a round into him. He was aiming for the chest, but somehow the bullet went through his knee. He went down like nothing with a scream. Way too loud.
"Damn it!" Taco said. He shot a round through the guy, ending him, but the damge had been done.
"Exfil ain't happening, we need to finish this." Redd said.
There was nothing to do but complete the mission. They were past the point of no return.
The base was a hulking mass of black tarps stretched over flimsy structures of metal poles, clipped together with zap-straps and hopes that the whole thing didn't fall over with a stiff breeze. It was shaped like a colloseum, and inside, more permanent structures had been erected. Like the Lean-to's identical to the one that Alice had back at base.
Redd pulled a knife out of his sheath, and cut through the material. The rain wasn't so bad inside, but it still leaked through in sheets in some places.
Most of the LSF were outside, because by this time they had probably heard the yells and found all the bodies. There were still a few LSF wandering around, but nothing the team couldn't handle.
They were on the edge of the tarp building, hidden behind a short wall made of two-by-fours. Anton again consulted a map.
"Looks like the command center is just across from here. We need to get over there, clear it out, and plant some of Taco's C4 on. On the way, we'll be going by what looks like close to the center of the base. We need to plant explosives around there, and that should bring the base down."
