Chapter 35: OPSCOMAfter the center of the base, Alice and the team cut through to the other side. This was the most permanent structure in the base, a concrete building, bout twenty feet long and seven feet across. It was only about eight feet high. There were no windows, and the only way in were two metal doors on the front.
"This is the Operational Command Center. We need to clear it out." Redd said. They were on the edge of the covered base. The Command Center was fifty meters out. The rain was still coming down hard, and visibility was low. Alice could just make out an LSF, with light grey fatigues walking through the rain. He was cradling an M16.
"No need to take him out."
They began to run past him, but he turned around. Taco shot him in the stoumach four times with his silenced AK-47. He fell to the mud, landing with a Spack!
Angel ran to the door, and pulled a brick of C4 out of his pack, like the one that Alice had planted inside the base. He stuck it to the door.
"Wait," Alice said. "What's in here?"
"We've got several armed LSF, plenty of techniciains and scientists, all with sidearms. We need to shoot everything out. Don't worry though, if you hit a console, it doesn't matter. The whole base is going to hell in five minutes anyway." Angel said.
"If we're not dead at that point." Krew pointed out, who was being helped by Anton, ever the optimist.
"We'll burn that bridge when we come to it."
"Check weapons and ammo."
Alice pulled her mag out, and to her alarm, it had only three bullets left. That would have been bad if she had gone in like that. She dropped the mag in the mud, and clicked another in.
"Breach."
The door exploded, and Alice went into tunnel vision. Everything slowed to a crawl. One of the people tapping away at a computer pulled a gun out of his jacket and aimed it at Alice. Before he squeezed the trigger, Alice shot him in the chest. He slumped to the ground. Next on the list of people in this room she needed to kill was a fully geared-up LSF, levelling his M16A4 at her. She sprayed a few bullets across him, and he went down like nothing. Some consoles behind him took a bullet, and sparks flew across the floor.
Krew was sitting outside, slowly losing blood. Anton whipped around the corner and shot at a few people. Alice was saved by one of Anton's bullets, but she never knew it. There was an LSF behind Alice, and he was about to shoot her, if not for Anton.
It took a mag of ammo or so from every member of the team to clear it out, and none of the Resistance were hit.
"Clear front!"
The room had consoles and computers built into the wall on either side of a narrow hallway. In between the walls of computers, there was a narrow hallway that went the length of the building. It was only wide enough enough to have one person walk along it. There were gaps in between some of the computers, and Alice thought that maybe a guy could hide back there.
Redd seemed to read her mind. "Alice, Taco, go along the walkway and check that the room is clear."
Taco nodded, and reloaded his weapon. Alice did the same, but noticed that the long weapon wouldn't be the best if there was a guy around her. She hung the rifle at her side, and pulled her handgun out of her houlster. She held that in one hand, with the knife in the other one, crossing her hands in the Harrys Style of CQC Handgun/Knife grip.
Alice went on point. The floor was littered with bodies, slowly leaking blood and filling the hallway. She struggled to maintain traction as her boots slid around in the thick red liquid that covered the floor. She checked the gaps, and only found dead bodies. It wasn't until the end, where the consoles stopped and the hall was slightly wider, that she found a guy.
(Break)
He had a bullet in his arm, but he bit his lip and stayed quiet, biding his time until he heard the two Resistance scum walk along the hallway. He had a gun in his good hand, and two spare mags beside him. He was prepared to take this whole team out. Chances were, they had already carved a hole through the base, and not many people would have suspected the Communication base to be where they were now. The OPSCOM was supposed to tell people where to go, but everyone else was dead. It was just him. He had to defend his base. He had a family. His girlfriend, her baby on the way... Maybe he would prepose to her after this. Yeah. Get married.
The footsteps, they came closer. The LSF, who's name was Dustin, quietly pulled the hammer back on the Beretta M9 he had in his hand. Dustin thought;
I will die to defend my home, my family, and I will repel all outsiders.
Love you baby. He pictured his girlfriend in his head.
As he raised the gun, he had to force the happy, warm thoughts out of his head, and he returned to the building, the bright, white, flourescent lights, the bleeding arm, his friends, laying everywhere.
He would do what it to-
He was caught off-guard by a girl in a balaclava, holding a M1911 in her hand. She shot Dustin in the chest. Dustin's only regret was that he forced his girlfriend's face out of his head seconds before he was killed.
And he couldn't remember what she looked like.
