Chapter 65: SOMETHING

When the city was casting a deep shadow over the truck, Redd, or rather, Light, pulled a balaclava over his head, gesturing to Alice to do the same. He loaded a handgun and put it in reach, just in case they couldn’t get through.

He put the truck into a lower gear as he rolled into a checkpoint. He looked to the booth, where a scarred man scowled, and then walked out, his M16 cradled in his arms.

 ‘Names.’

Redd panicked inside. He hadn’t prepared for this. “Uh, er,” He paused. “I’m Carpenter, he’s,” He pointed to Alice. “Shell, and that’s Walrus back there.”

The man paused and stared for a good half minute, before heading back to the booth. He conversed with a young woman for a moment, then came back. “Carpenter?”

 “That’s me.”

He pulled open the car door. Redd widened his eyes and put his hand on the gun, but he was pulled right out of the truck. Alice gripped the VoidGun and began to raise it, but stopped when the man pulled Redd into a passionate hug.

“Alex! I thought I’d lost you. They said you were dead!”

Redd was frozen. His eye twitched.

“Alex! I missed you so much.” The man continued. He pulled the bottom of Redd’s mask off, revealing his mouth and nose, and kissed him hard.

Redd tentatively kissed back. Alice leaned back and smirked.

“Let me see your face Alex.”

Redd spoke now. “You don’t want to see me like this. Meet me at my place tonight.”

 “I love you Alex.”

 “Yeah, yeah love you too.”

He got back in the car, and drove through once the gate opened. When they were clear of the ckeckpoint Redd pulled into an alley and got out, placing one hand against a wall and vomiting for nearly a minute. He looked up, holding his soiled balaclava.

“That was the worst thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ve been shot, exploded, tortured, and stabbed.”

Angel was laughing uncontrollably in the backseat. “That was so funny. I nearly gave us away.”

 “I hate you Si-, Duchess.”

 “The feeling is mutual, Light.”

After wiping his mouth, Redd got back into the car, and slowly drove the truck through side-streets and alleys, wherever they wouldn’t be seen. When they were close to the town square, about a block away, they stopped the car. Without a word, Alice went around the back and opened the back of the truck. Inside was most of the team’s gear, including back-packs, explosives, climbing rope and carabiners, and Redd’s massive sniper rifle. They all grabbed their things, and before leaving, Redd took a heavy block of plastique and smeared it into the bottom of the truck. He stuck a detonating charge into the putty-like explosive.

When they were done there, Duchess, Light, and King loaded their weapons and headed on the prowl.
