"Calum!" I yelled as I opened my front door and seen the boy standing there. He had just arrived in Salt Lake City a few hours before, and since my parents weren't home I invited him over. My mom went to bookstore uptown and my dad was already back at work. Kyle, Halle, and Dana were upstairs but I knew they wouldn't rat me out, they could care less. Calum was wearing a grey shirt with dark skinny jeans, and it was unusual for me to see him in jeans. At camp, he wore shorts most of the time because it was summer, so it was a bit different for me.
"Hey, Caroline!" He beamed as I engulfed him in a hug. It had only been four months since I last seen him, but it felt longer. Although, I saw him every few days on Skype, it wasn't the same as seeing him in person.
"It's so good to see you," I said, my voice muffled from my face being buried in his shoulder.
"You too," Calum laughed, his arms tightening around my waist. I sighed and pulled away from him, grabbing his hand and leading him into the house. "Your house is nice." Calum nodded approvingly as his eyes scanned the living room. I rolled my eyes.
"It's not that great," I thought back to when Luke said that it looked like I was rich from the size of my house, there was nothing special about it.
"Whatever," It was Calum's turn to roll his eyes. We sat down on the couch and I dropped his hand, realizing I was still holding it. Calum moved around on the couch, trying to get comfy. Once he was finally settled, he turned his attention to me and smiled. "How was your Christmas?" I realized he was asking this question since we hadn't had time to talk on the phone or skype because he was too busy packing.
"It was okay," I shrugged, "Nothing great happened, but nothing horrible either." My Christmas consisted of absolutely nothing, really. It was my first time away from my family at Christmas time, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents. But it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I mean, I received a new laptop and a pair of blue converse, two things that I really needed replaced. It was a average Christmas for me, just with less people than I was used to. "How was yours?"
"It was fine," Calum nodded, "It was just mom, dad, Mali, and I. Thankfully, James wasn't there." He rolled his eyes at the thought of James.
"You know, from what you've told me, Mali and James sound pretty serious. You'll have to get used to him being around."
"You have no idea," Calum mumbled. I furrowed my eyebrows and was about to ask him what he meant, but he started to speak again.
"I got you this," Calum reached into his pocket and pulled out a small circular red box. The moment I looked at it I remembered the present Luke and Audrey had given me, and how I still hadn't opened it. I had actually forgotten about the gift until that moment.
"No, Calum." I shook my head. I hadn't gotten him anything for Christmas, and I felt bad. I had plenty of time to do it after I found out he was coming to Utah, but I guess I was so excited that he was coming that it slipped my mind. "I didn't get you anything, I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it," Calum shrugged, a huge smile on his face, "I don't need anything." I smiled back at him and took the box from his hand. I opened it and gasped as I saw what was inside. It was a pair of pink pearl earrings, and they looked pretty expensive.
"Calum," I looked up at him, "What the hell?"
He laughed. "I've been saving up with that job I got, and well I got those for you. They're not real pearls, but who will know that?"
"They're so pretty," I closed the box and sat it down before reaching over and hugging Calum again. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Calum said.
"Now I feel even worse that I didn't get you anything."
"I told you not to worry about it," I pulled away from Calum and rolled my eyes at both him and what I was about to do. "Do you want to see what Luke and Audrey got me for Christmas?" Calum raised an eyebrow. I laughed and got up from the couch, walking over to my bag by the door. I reached in and pulled out the blue box before walking back over and sitting down beside Calum.
"Wait, I'm still trying to process this," Calum held a hand up, "Luke bought you a Christmas present?"
"He and Audrey did," I nodded. Calum shook his head in disbelief and I untied the silver bow on top of the box. I opened the box and was utterly surprised at the gift. It was a diamond necklace, the pendant being a simple circle. And by the looks of it, the diamond was real.
"Damn," Calum cursed, "That makes my gift look like crap." I laughed nervously, not really sure how to process this. Luke and Audrey had spent a lot of money on me for Christmas, and all I had gotten them was a charm bracelet and a stupid doll. I was starting to feel even worse, first I didn't get Calum anything for Christmas, and now I got two very shitty gifts for people who had spent a large amount of cash for my gift.
"Uh," I wasn't sure what to say, so I shut the box and my mouth. Calum cleared his throat and stood up.
"I have to get going," Calum told me, "I told Luke I was going to the store to get some snacks for the guest house since Michael amd Ashton are arriving tomorrow, and I'm driving Luke's car. He'll start wondering where I am." I don't know why Calum and I decided to keep it a secret from Luke that we still talked, it just kind of happened. But I knew he would find out eventually that we were close, it was inevitable.
"Yeah, okay." I stood also and walked him to the door. I knew that my mom would probably be him soon, so it was best if he left. "I'll see you on New Years Eve." I told him as he stepped out the door. Calum turned and smiled at me.
"Not if I see you first," With that he turned and left, leaving me standing there with a stupid smile on my face.
