"Kyle, what are you doing?"
My brother just stared at me, obviously not knowing how to respond.
"Uh, well." Kyle tried to form a sentence but stumbled over his words, resulting in another silence. He quickly bent down and searched for the key, finding it quicker than I imagined he would. He stuck it in the key hole with ease and stumbled inside the house. I followed behind him, trying to keep up as he practically ran up the stairs.
"Kyle!" I whisper-yelled, chasing him up the stairs. He reached his bedroom and walked in, not bothering to shut the door. "Kyle, where were you?" I trudged into his bedroom, my hand on my hip. I didn't like they fact that my little brother was out in the middle of the night doing God knows what.
"Where were you?" Kyle countered, sitting down on his bed and pulling his shoes off his feet. I opened my mouth to speak before closing it again.
"I was at a party, if you must know."
"Okay," Kyle nodded, finally getting both of his shoes off, "If you don't tell mom and dad that I was out, I won't tell them you were at a party."
I sighed. The point wasn't for him not to tell our parents, I wanted to know where he was. Kyle had been acting a little strange lately around me, every since the last party we went to. I didn't know what was bugging him, but I wished he would just be honest with me.
"Right now, I don't care if you tell mom and dad. I just want to know where you were."
"It's none of your business." Kyle snapped, then mumbled something under his breath that I didn't catch. He stood up and walked over to his closet, pulling out a grey shirt.
"Kyle, just tell me, please. I know it's none of my business, but you've been weird around me for a couple of weeks. I just want to know what's wrong. Did I do something?" I felt like it was my fault, though I wasn't sure what I did wrong. I wanted Kyle to talk to me, I wanted him to know that he could whenever he needed to.
"You didn't do anything, Caroline. I was with someone." Kyle said flatly, pulling off his white shirt and putting on the grey one.
"Was it a girl?" I smiled at my brother, who rolled his eyes. I knew Kyle had a girlfriend once when he was thirteen. He told me about her, he said she was a nice girl. But since they broke up, he hadn't had one. At least not one he had told me about. "What's her name?" I was suddenly okay with my brother being out, if it was a girl. I didn't know why, really. I guess I just wanted him to be happy.
"You know too much already." Kyle shook his head, walking over to his bed and lying down.
"Oh, c'mon," I groaned, "Just tell me her name."
"I can't." Kyle buried his face in his pillow, causing his voice to be muffled.
"Why not?" I whined, wanting to know more. I didn't see the big deal, I was his big sister. Maybe I could help him with his girl troubles, if it ever came to that.
"I promised that I wouldn't talk about this, Caroline. Just go away."
"What do you mean?" My eyebrows crinkled together, trying to understand what he meant. "You promised who, Kyle?"
"It doesn't matter. I'm tired and I don't know what I'm saying. Just go so I can sleep." Kyle turned his head toward me as he spoke so that his voice wouldn't be muffled.
"Fine," I sighed, not pleased that I hadn't gotten anything out of him. "Good night." Kyle groaned in response as I walked out of his room and shut the door.
I walked down the hall to the bathroom, deciding to take a shower before I went to bed. I felt pretty gross, though I didn't know why. I guess it was because I was still feeling a little bad from my hangover.
I went straight to the shower and turned it on, waiting for the water to warm up. I looked in the bathroom mirror, examining myself. I was tired and you could tell that from the bag under my eyes. My hair was a tangled mess, I could only imagine what Ashton thought when he ran into me at the party.
Something caught my eye and I leaned closer to the mirror, hoping to God that the mark on my neck wasn't what I thought it was. But just my luck, it was exactly that.
Luke had given me a hickey. Just great.
