"Luke, c'mon, just choose a shirt already." I groaned, sitting down on his bed. He had been going through his wardrobe for about an hour, trying to find the right shirt to wear to my birthday dinner the next day. I really didn't see the big deal, but Luke said he had to make a good impression on my parents. His bedroom floor was now full of clothes from his closet and dresser, and I was amazed that someone could own so many clothes.
"It's not that simple, Caroline." Luke sighed, holding up a red shirt from his dresser. He eyed it for a few seconds and then threw it over his shoulder, causing it to land at my feet.
"I just don't see what the big deal is, most of your clothes are black anyway." I glanced around the room at all the astray clothes, "Just wear the flannel you bought yesterday."
"I already thought about that," Luke turned around and looked at me, "but then I figured it would be too formal, so I decided against it. I need to look nice."
"Luke, it's a dinner, not a wedding. It's okay to dress formal." I laughed, finding his panicking state somewhat amusing. I had seen him nervous before, but never this nervous. "My family doesn't dress up for this, we just wear normal clothes."
"That's easy for you to say, Caroline, they're your family." Luke mumbled, turning back around to dig through his drawers again.
"Yes, they are and I can assure you that no one is going to judge you if you show up in a flannel." I rolled my eyes at Luke, wishing he would calm down a little. He was really overreacting about the whole dinner and I just wanted him to choose a shirt already. "Besides, you're just gonna show up in black skinny jeans anyway."
Luke turned around again and stared at me with wide eyes, and then placed his head in his hands. "Oh, my God. I don't think I have any dress pants. I have those pants that go with my tux, but that may look a bit too dressy. Caroline, what am I going to do? I'm gonna have to go buy a pair of pants, but I guess while I'm out I can just get a shirt, too. But what if I can't find a shirt and pants that I like? I-"
"Luke, calm down!" I stood from the bed and walked over to him. I pried his hands from his face and intertwined our fingers. He stared at me for a few seconds before sighing deeply and licking his lips. "It's okay. Just wear the flannel with a pair of jeans. It doesn't matter, my parents won't care and besides, you look nice in flannel." I smiled at him, and his lips slowly curved upward.
"Okay, I'll wear it for you." Luke said as he pecked me lightly on the lips, "Though, I still think it'll be too formal." He mumbled.
"Stop being so stubborn." I laughed, giving Luke another kiss on the lips.
There was a knock at the door and Luke quickly pulled away from the kiss, telling whoever was at the door to come in.
The door opened and Luke's dad walked in with a basket of clothes in his hands. I had met Luke's dad only a few weeks before and he seemed to be just a tad nicer than Luke's mom. He always greeted me while Luke's mom just stared at me as if I was a bad taste in her mouth. It bothered Luke more than it bothered me, I couldn't care less that she didn't like me.
Luke's dad stopped once he saw all the clothes scattered around the floor, giving Luke a confused look.
"What happened in here?" He questioned.
"I'm having dinner at Caroline's tomorrow and I was trying to find something to wear." Luke said quietly, not even looking at his dad. Instead, he stared down at our intertwined fingers.
"Your mother told me to bring these clean clothes up and for you to put them away, then bring the basket back downstairs." His dad informed him as he stepped over clothes to reach Luke's bed, placing the basket on top of it. "And clean up this mess when you're finished." He walked over to the door and left without another word.
"See what I mean?" Luke asked as soon as his dad was gone. I furrowed my eyebrows, not understanding what he meant.
"What do you mean, 'See what I mean?'?"
"My dad is a jerk." Luke bit his lip, looking over at the door as if his dad was still standing there.
"He didn't even do anything." I said slowly. I didn't see why Luke was bringing this up when his dad had done nothing wrong.
"I just don't like him." Luke mumbled, pulling his hands away from mine and walking over to his closet. He began to pull out pairs of shoes out of his shoe shelf and place them on the floor. I was about to question what he was doing, but decided against it.
"Luke, he's your dad." I sighed, crossing my arms over my chest.
"I love him, but I don't like him." Luke said as he stood up from placing his shoes on the floor. "Can you bring me that basket?" I retrieved the basket and handed it to Luke, who began to shove the clothes into the shoe shelf.
"What are you doing?" I laughed.
"I don't have enough room for all my clothes, so I do this sometimes and as the I wear the clothes, I place the shoes back on the shelf."
"But you don't know what's on the bottom of your shoes and you're placing your clean clothes there." I scrunched up my face.
Luke stopped and looked over at me. "I actually never thought about that." After a second, he shrugged and continued placing the clothes on the shelf.
I walked over to him and placed my arms around his waist, resting my head on his back. I stayed quiet for a while as Luke continued what he was doing with his clothes.
"Are you still nervous about tomorrow?" I asked. I knew that no matter what Luke was going to be at least a little nervous, but I was hoping that most of his nerves would go away.
"Of course," Luke sighed, "But, I guess you're right. I really don't have that much to be worried about."
"You don't." I shook my head the best I could with it being rested Luke's back. Luke sat the basket in his hand down and turned around to face me, pushing my hair out of my face. His eyes roamed my face before he sighed yet again.
"You're so beautiful." Luke muttered, but I wasn't sure if he was exactly talking to me, I'm pretty sure he was saying it more to himself.
"That came out of nowhere." I laughed softly, looking down at the ground. I suddenly felt very self-conscious and wasn't exactly sure how to respond.
Luke suddenly pulled me into a hug and buried his face in my hair, while I buried mine in his chest. It was quiet for a while, and it felt nice. I didn't have to talk to Luke to have a good time, it was great just being with him.
"Do you really think everything will be fine tomorrow?" Luke said into my hair, his voice slightly muffled.
I turned my head so that I could speak clearly. "Yeah, I'm sure of it. My family will love you just like I do."
"Kyle isn't very fond of me." Luke pointed out.
"I still don't know why." I sighed. I just wished Luke would tell me, I would stop bugging him if he did. It would be a lot easier for both of us if he just told me the truth.
Luke sighed deeply in return and stayed silent for a few seconds. "I love you, Caroline."
"I love you more, Luke." I smiled to myself. Sometimes I wish Luke knew how much I actually loved him, and that I did forgive him for everything that happened. Even though I knew that sometimes he thought that I hadn't forgiven him, I had.
"That's not possible." Luke hugged me tighter.
