He's Oprah, Bruno. He's my Oprah. He's like President Obama. President Obama has just asked to see you and me. - Tina Danielson

"I'm going to do it...I'm so going to do it...there's no going back...I'm making the call..." I tapped my finger on Mode's spare telephone that no one ever used.
My mother's phone number was already in the receiver; all I had to do was hit call.
"You sure? You've been telling me how pumped you've been for like...fifteen minutes." Collette looked at her phone with a chuckle. "There's only an hour in a lunch break, Teen."
"I know."
"It's not like it's your first time telling her you have a boyfriend, let alone a hot, rich, celebrity boyfriend who's a singer...oh my Gosh...it is, isn't it?"
"He's not my boyfriend..." I ignored the question.
"What about high school boyfriends? You haven't told your mom about any of them? You sneaky whore she must think you're still a virgin or something!"
"Don't get it twisted; you've lived in the city all your life. Back home everyone knew everyone and they all gossiped to anybody- even those who didn't want to listen. So I could be holding hands with a guy and by the time I got home my dad would have heard about it, my mom would have had time to configure a fact file about the guy and my brother who was in college across town would already be laughing about it."
It was all true, small town equals no secrets so to be engaged in any PDA anywhere in public was basically my way of telling my mother that I liked a guy, I've never really had to go up to her and be like: hey mom, so....I'm kind of seeing this guy....
"No shit...wow....but she'll like him, just send her a link of Just The Way You Are and she'll be hooked." Collette smiled supportively and patted my hand. "You have nothing to worry about and if she doesn't like it then tough. She's in Iowa, what the hell can she do anyway?"
"...you're right...I'm doing it." I said with new conviction. I was going to do this, now. I grabbed Mode's phone and hit call.
"Tina! Tina! Tina!" Collette NBA style cheered me on. It earned a few stares from out colleagues in nearby offices but who cares?
"Hello? Danielson residence?" I heard my mother's professional voice answer the house phone.
"Hey, mom." I said into the phone trying to sound calm, just be calm, Tina....
"Tina? This is a surprise, where are you calling from I don't recognize this number."
Maybe it wasn't the best idea calling her from my work's number. She would know where to find me during most of the daytime.
"Just from the work phone, mom. I know this is a random time but I called to tell you something..." I looked at Collette and she waved her hand wide, I needed to elaborate. "Something important." I corrected myself and Collette did a thumbs up in approval.
"Is everything alright, darling? Tina, are you okay?" Mom went into panic mode. Of course, that's her default mode.
"Yeah I'm fine...more than fine really...I called to let you know that I'm...in a relationship..." It felt so weird saying these words. I looked at Collette and she smiled. "...with a guy."
I don't know why I added that and from Collette's face she didn't know either.
"Really? You're dating, Valena?" I could practically feel the smile on my mom's face. "Who, who, who? How old is he? What does he do? What's his name?"
