"Axen, come on! This isn't funny anymore! Where are you?" Brista shouted through the waters of the ocean, her turquoise tail moving up and down behind her while she swam to find her friend. Her long, pink hair trailed behind her and she groaned. "If you went back to the island I'm going to kill you."
With that, she took off as fast as she could swim in the direction of the Isle of Mermaids. But a rumbling overhead made her stop and stare upward at the shadow of the boat. At first, she thought they might be going fishing, but instead, she saw the shape of arms throw something out over the side of the boat. A glass container began sinking through the water, and the boat sped away right afterward.
Slowly, Brista began to swim towards this small glass thing, her eyes widening when she saw what was held within. A tiny figure, that couldn't be more than a few inches tall sat inside, struggling to stay above the water that was slowly leaking into the jar. "Oh, you poor thing! Hang on, I'll help you!"
The mermaid carefully lifted the jar into her hands, taking it under her arm and again began to swim to the Isle. But this time it was to get this little person out of the water and onto dry land.
She could see the entryway in the distance, but the jar was almost full. Brista didn't think she'd be able to make it in time to save them. So risking being captured herself, she swam as fast as she could to the surface of the ocean and held the jar straight above her in two hands so it would be the first thing to emerge.
When the cold air hit her arms, she used her tail to push herself above the water and looked at the jar. The poor little thing was struggling to stay above the surface, each kick of its legs looking weaker as it seemed to be growing tired. "Awe, here." Brista twisted the lid and dumped the water back into the ocean, catching the tiny being in her palm before it could fall back into the water.
The being stared up at her from her palm, soaking wet and shivering. "Let's get you back. Um...oh! I know." Brista set the tiny human on the top of her head and swam above the water, kicking her tail and using her arms to swim closer to the island that stuck up out of the ocean. Sure it was slower, but it kept whatever it was from drowning.
Brista could feel the being shifting around, and a small tug on her hair made her cringe but she assured herself it didn't mean to pull her hair.
It took about seven or so minutes until she finally arrived at the beach of the island, resting one arm in the sand while she reached up and took the little human off her head and placed them carefully in the sand. "There. Can you talk? What's your name?" Brista asked as gently as she could, curiously watching the being stand and dust itself off. But then it opened it's mouth and some sort of garbled speech came out. She couldn't understand a word of what was being said. "Um..." But at least she could tell it was a girl.
The tiny being's eyes looked sad for a moment before it again opened its mouth. "Kn-Know little words. N-Not speak English. B-But thanks you."
"Oh...I see. Well...what are you at least? Can you tell me that at most? Hang on, let me make this easier than just laying in the sand." Brista grunted, using her arms to pull herself out of the ocean and pushed herself onto her back. "G-Give me a second to dry off and..." A tingling feeling shot through her tail.
After a soft light shone around her, her tail was replaced with legs and a green skirt made from palm leaves encircled her waist and formed a crop top like shirt. "There. Now, what are you? I'm a mermaid."
"Muh...Mermaid. Mermaids...real?" The tiny girl questioned and was hesitant to step forward.
"Yes, we're real." Very thoughtfully, she reached down and closed her fingers around her gently.
"I-I Lila. I-I Restrian." Lila spoke quietly, focused on getting her words right. "Thanks you 'gain."
"You don't have to thank me. For now...let's just try and work on getting to know each other a little better." Brista smiled. From what she knew, Restrian's were tiny beings with their own languages, that hid in forests in groups called 'Clans.' But because they were so rarely seen, not a lot was known about them.
"W-We f-friends?" Lila asked, a hopeful tone lacing her voice as she placed her tiny hands on one of the mermaid's fingers.
A warm smile crossed Brista's lips and slowly she nodded her head. "Sure. We're friends."
