Merry Christmas

"Pst. Hey. Hey. Jordan, wake up! It's Christmas Eve!" A small voice whispered into my ear, and I grimace slightly in response.

"Genevieve...we don't have to wake up early on Christmas Eve," I whisper with a quiet giggle, slowly opening my eyes to turn and look at the Borrower sitting on my pillow.

"It's not early. It's noon." Ginny slid down the blanket I call a pillow and stumbled as she landed on the sheets.

"Noon? Well, I was up really late." Groaning, I sit upright and lower my hand toward my little friend. We've grown very close over the past few months. I was glad to have such a good friend. And a Borrower at that! I was already an expert at how to take care of them and make sure they were safe.

"I got you a present. Since I can't join your family tomorrow, I wanted to give it to you now." Genevieve took off across my bed and climbed down the sewing thread I tied to it as a rope so she could come and go. What I did was a took a few long pieces and braided them together, so it was thick and strong enough for her.

"Yeah...I wish I wasn't so scared as to how my family would react to you. I just want-"

"Me to be safe." Ginny cut in with a giggle, and I could hear the smile in her voice as I watched her run across my carpeted floor to the little hidey hole she's got behind my T.V.

"Took the words right out of my mouth." Smiling, I very carefully lower myself out of bed. If I were to jump, it would rattle everything and probably scare the crap out of Ginny. Since my bed is raised for storage purposes. "Oh! I actually got you something too!" I had completely forgotten about the dress I spent weeks learning how to make and how to get each stitch perfect for a Borrower.

"Me first!" Ginny said with a wide smile as she emerged from her hidey hole, carrying what looked to be an old golden locket. It was comical, watching her carry this round thing the size of a large pumpkin to her.

As I sat on the floor, I took the locket from her hands and held it in a palm, examining the details. "Where did you get this Ginny?" I ask with a gentle tone, turning to look at her and her smile faded from her tiny face.

"D...Do I have to tell you?" The Borrower looked ashamed of herself, and her head lowered so I couldn't see her face anymore.

"Did you take it from my mom?" I gently scoop her into my free hand, and I could feel her begin to tremble in my palm.

"I-I'm sorry!" Ginny squealed and looked up at me with big eyes. Even though we're friends, some moments like these always remind me just how scared she can really be of me.

"It's okay. It's old, I can tell this is one she doesn't use anymore." Very delicately, I brush my thumb over her arm in an attempt to comfort her.

"Please just open it." Ginny pleaded, keeping her head down.

Lowering the Borrower back to the floor, I take the locket in both hands and pry it open. Inside was a handwritten note in scribbly writing, clearly written by someone who barely knew how to write. 'Mery Krismes Jorden. Thank u for helping me.' Reading through the short note, I turn my head to smile at Genevieve. "Thank you."

Genevieve smiled widely up at me, her eyes relaxing as they glistened happily. "You're welcome!"

"I think I should help you learn to write too. And read. Would you like that?" I offer softly with a warm smile, closing the locket and tucking it into the pocket of my pajamas.

"That'd be great! Merry Christmas Jordan!" Ginny's tiny arms encircled my fingers, and I could hear her quiet, happy giggles.

Closing my eyes, I smile and encircle my hand around her tiny form to try and give her a gentle hug. "Merry Christmas Genevieve."
