The House

Laura heaved a heavy sigh as she scrolled through her feed, waiting for her friends to message her. As she scrolled, notifications were constantly popping up from other friends and family, wishing her a happy birthday. But she didn't really care. Sure she said 'Thank you' to the posts, but she wasn't excited about it this year. As she had gotten older, the excitement sort of wore off. And now that she's graduated, it's really not as fun.

Outside her apartment door, she began to hear shuffling. It quite frightened her, as it was rather early in the morning and she wasn't expecting anyone. But then there was a soft 'thud' and a car was heard speeding off. She sat in her desk chair for a few moments before slowly rising to her feet and heading to the door.

If there was a possible intruder, she does have her pepper spray ready. So flinging the door open she aimed the small bottle. But there was no one, nothing, except a box resting on her doorstep. On the tag it read 'Happy Birthday' but there was nothing else, not even a return address.

"Must be from my aunt, she's always sending me packages to make sure I have everything I need." She sighs. But she was truly grateful to her aunt though. With her apartments rent and a few bills, she had trouble with money but her family was very helpful until she's able to get on her feet.

Peeling back the tape sealing the box, Laura opened the lid as her eyes fell onto a wonderfully handcrafted dollhouse. The wooden siding was painted white, the roof's shingles were carved in vivid detail, even the windows from what she could tell were actual glass instead of plastic. But there was just one problem. "I'm not six." She mumbled softly as she lifted the model house out of its box and peered into one of the windows. Her eyes widened when she saw what looked to be a human lying on the couch but immediately shook it off with a laugh. "If the house is in this great of detail, surely the doll would be too. But it looked so...lifelike." She whispered, doing a double take on the figure.

Sure enough, the hair spread out and fell onto its face where it laid, it's lips, face, and nose were in such great detail, and even the little jeans and t-shirt looked more like real fabric than doll clothes. She just had to take a closer look.

After placing the house on the desk in her bedroom, Laura began searching for a way to open it. In a few minutes of looking, she found that just the roof lifted off but there was no way of getting to the floor below. So with a frustrated huff, she stuck her hand through where the stairs led and her fingers fumbled around with a table, a chair, and even a tiny T.V. As she continued feeling around the downstairs living room, a shrill scream broke out causing Laura's hand to rip right back to her side and run to her bedroom window to see if she could find who made the noise. But there was no one outside.

Now she was confused. Could she have imagined it? No, there was no way. It was too clear. Slowly she turned around, wondering if the scream could have been in another one of the nearby apartments instead of outside. But then she saw movement, just inside the window of the dollhouse. A pair of green eyes stared fearfully at her through the glass before disappearing around the corner.

"What the actual fuck?" Laura mumbled as she approached the small house, kneeling down to peek inside. The doll wasn't on the couch. Instead, the human looking thing was standing with its back pressed into the wall, green eyes staring back into Laura's dark brown ones. She suddenly realized this wasn't a doll. "Hey, get out here." She said softly. She was very confused but also was quite amazed. A tiny person.

The tiny being suddenly scrambled out the front door, looking fearfully at her. "Y-Yes mistress." It uttered softly, its head hanging low now.

"Mistress? What? Whoa. That sounds freaky, why are you calling me that? Who are you? What are you?" Laura's fingers lifted the being off the table, placing it on its feet in her open palm.

"Th-that's what I was trained to call my owner. A-And my name is Maya, but you can always change it! I-I'm...human. Well...I was. I'm your pet now." The tiny woman's voiced changed from fear to sadness, and Laura watched its small form quiver.

"Human? Then why are you so small?" Laura used a finger to rub her arm gently at an attempt to calm her.

"I'm not an entirely sure mistress. I-I was on my way home from my high school, then somebody yanked me into an alley and used this needle and-" Her voice broke and she began sobbing heavily but continued her story. "Th-They hurt me, forced me to act like a pet, then just gave me away and now I'm here! I-I want to go home!" She continued to sob, crumpling to her knees in Laura's palm.

The graduated teen frowned, bringing the tiny girl close to herself. "You were just...taken away...from your school, your friends, your family, and forced to be a pet." She summed up the tale before attempting to hug her. "Hush now. I want you to tell me where you're from."

"Pittsburg, Pennsylvania," Maya replied, using her arm to wipe her eyes as she managed to take deep breaths and calm down. "W-Why?"

"I'm taking you home, okay? You're not a pet, you're just a shrunken human, I think. And I also think your family needs you." Laura picked up her purse with her free hand, slinging it over her shoulder when she felt a tight grip on her thumb and looked to see Maya hugging it.

"Th-Thank you! H-How can I ever repay you for being this kind to me mistress?" Her small voice whispered out, and Laura quietly laughed.

"Just don't call me mistress, and let go of my thumb before you cut off he circulation, okay? And you have no reason to thank me."

Laura then left her apartment, holding the tiny girl close as she hurried into the drivers side of her car. It was then she began the six hour drive all the way to Pennsylvania. After all, it was her birthday present to do with as she wished.
