It was a chilly day out, a light breeze blowing and shaking the trees. Few remaining leaves fell to the ground, decorating pavement and grassy areas in different shades of red, orange, and yellow.
A young woman by the name of Trish was walking along a nature route, a gray scarf wrapped around her neck, a maroon colored coat around her body, and a matching red hat to keep her ears warm.
She listened to the gentle sound of birds chirping, knowing it wouldn't be long before all of them were gone for the winter and all the color would be replaced with plain white.
A specific chirp caught her attention. It sounded pained. Turning her head to the side, she spotted a small blue bird fluttering its wings helplessly and trying to take off with no success.
"You poor little thing," Trish murmured in a soft tone, slowly approaching the wounded animal. "Do you need some help?"
Naturally, the bird didn't reply but only spasmed more in a fearful attempt to escape the oncoming woman.
Clicking her tongue in a disapproving manner, Trish got close enough that she could kneel down and stretch her hand out to the frightened creature. "Easy now little guy. I won't hurt you. Is it your wing?"
The bluebird surprisingly seemed to calm down, it's small black eyes watching her. It chirped the same way it had before as if it were trying to speak to her.
"Oh, I wish I could understand you," Trish sighed in a dejected manner. She took both her hands, preparing to scoop up the tiny bird when what sounded like tiny cracking noises started coming from it.
The feathers seemed to fall right off the animal, its whole body moving and changing. The soft creaking of bones continued.
Trish covered her mouth with one of her hands, silver eyes widening in absolute shock at what she was witnessing. Now in the birds place sat a tiny humanoid, sitting on their knees and staring up at her.
One of the arms touched the other, their small hand covering what looked to be a horrid gash. "C-Can you please...p-please help me. M-My arm."
Wasting no time, Trish still gently lifted the tiny being into her hands. "Easy now. It's okay. Let's first get you out of the cold. This is so strange. Please don't mind me asking, but what...what are you?" She asked, already walking back down the path towards the direction of her home.
"I-I'm a shapeshifter. I can only t-turn into little animals though. B-Birds, mice, certain insects," the little person muttered out, blood running through their fingers and down their other arm.
Trish could see how bad the wound was and knew she had to be fast. "Do you have a name? My name is Trish."
"K-Kevin," the small male choked out, his arm throbbing in pain. "Th-Thank you, for your kindness. You were about to help me, even if I was just a b-bird."
"You were an innocent creature, you still are. Thank you for letting me help you," Trish smiled warmly down at Kevin, her hands cupping around him in a way that the cold wind wouldn't blow against him.
Wrapping her head around this was difficult, but her only thoughts were on ensuring this little person's arm got fixed up.
