Kenneth let out a small cry of pain as the hand struck the side of his face, and he stood with tear filled eyes in front of his foster father. "Just get out of here and don't show your face again until dinner!"
"B-But it's raining!" Kenneth responded, tears trailing down his face as he backed away from the man.
"And?! I said go, before I hit you again!"
And with that Kenneth ran from the small house into the pouring rain in nothing but his sweatshirt and jeans. His hair was soaked in a matter of minutes, dripping onto his face until it was impossible to tell what was tears and what was rain.
He ran until he reached an alley that was far from his house. He sat behind a dumpster, sobbing uncontrollably as he lifted the sleeves of his sweatshirt, revealing several deep cuts along his wrist. Failed attempts. He didn't know why it never worked.
Pulling his old pocket knife he found in his foster father's room, he flipped it open and with shaky hands, began carving words into his wrists. Worthless. Something both his foster father and mother called him. Burden.
He cringed in pain as blood ran down his arms, sniffling softly and using his rolled up sleeve to wipe his eyes. But then there was something else. Another type of pain stinging his arm. He bit back another sob as his vision began to blur. He felt this was it. He'd finally done it. Slowly, his eyes closed and he fell onto his side on the concrete ground of the alley.
Kenneth awoke a while later but found himself lying somewhere fairly comfortable. Had someone taken him to a hospital? Carefully, he pries his eyes open and suddenly screamed in fear.
Above him was a large woman's face, looking down at him with a compassion in her eyes. But this went unseen as the boy began to fight against her arms which were cradling him in her lap.
"Hush now child. It's alright." She said in a gentle tone as he arms only tightened slightly around his body, just to hold him in place. "You're safe now. They can't hurt you anymore."
He stopped struggling when his eyes landed on the bandages wrapped around where he had cut himself. Had she done that? Very slowly he looked up at the woman with frightened tears in his eyes. "H-How small a-am I?" He stuttered out, able to feel his body quivering against her.
"Twelve inches. I had to shrink you, those horrible people the police call your parents would you if I didn't." She said softly, her finger delicately brushing the bandages on his arms. "And these...I couldn't watch you hurt yourself anymore. Do you know who I am?" She asked gently.
It was now that he took a good long look at her face and it suddenly hit him. "Y-You were a teacher at my school last year!" he exclaimed, sitting up in her arms. "Y-You were very nice to me." Even though he was no taller than a Barbie doll, the fear was beginning to dissipate as he grew more comfortable with this woman.
"Of course, because I'd seen you all over town. You are treated horribly by those two and by the children at school. I don't want you to have to go through that anymore." She once again spoke gently, placing the young teen on the bed she was seated on.
"Y-You know you technically kidnapped me right?" Kenneth mumbled, standing on the squishy surface of the mattress to try and walk, but the ground was so unstable he found himself falling forward. Only instead of faceplanting, a warm hand encircled his torso.
"I know. But you really need a good home. Look at you...you're so pale and thin. And besides, wouldn't you want a nice home?"
"Well of course." He said softly, resting his shaky hands on the giant one encircling him. "W-Why are you so concerned about me?"
"I lost my own son when he was born...I've always wanted a child...and you I'm sure you want a parent that doesn't treat you like you're nothing, and make you want to do this to yourself." Her eyes fell to the bandages on his arms and his face turned into confusion then shame.
He was currently fighting an inner battle with himself. This woman just shrunk him to the size of a Barbie and kidnapped him, but her kindness and gentleness were so comforting. Before he knew it, he found himself agreeing with the giant woman and nods his head. "A-Alright. Maybe for just...just a little bit."
