Mara knew of the giants that roamed these woods. She knew how they took humans and devoured them whole. And that's exactly what she wants. After losing both her mother and father in a terrible accident, she's been alone. Homeless. An orphan. Scarcely any food to eat, no clean water, and no new clothes. Often she would watch children walk these cobblestone streets with their parents, smiling and laughing and enjoying candy. But none of that came for her.
She just wants the pain to end. She doesn't want to have no food, no family, and no home anymore. All Mara wants now is to die, and the easiest way to do so would be at the hands of one of those giant monsters.
Once she was at the edge of the woods just outside of town, she fell to her knees and looked up into the night sky. She was ready. The ground beneath her began to shake, heavy, loud cracking as trees were knocked down. Footsteps shaking the earth below her. And then, the giant face of a male came into view, a wicked grin plastered on his face.
When Silas's eyes fell onto the child just sitting on the ground, he knew he was in luck. Never has he found a snack so soon in his hunting sessions. He didn't hesitate when he stooped down and snatched this little girl in a tight fist, waiting to hear a scream but it didn't come. She must be frozen in fear.
He held her near his face, using the moonlight to examine his morsel's features. Instead of bright, vibrant eyes, they were dull and near emotionless. Instead of a plump child's body, it was thin and starved. And instead of tan skin from playing in the sun, the human was pale as pale could be.
"Well girl, why aren't you trying to escape?" He questioned, keeping his voice low and menacing in hopes of scaring her. However, the girl's eyes remained emotionless and she was silent. This slightly angered him, as he felt he was being ignored. "I asked you a question girl."
The giant's words went in one ear and out the other to Mara. Why wasn't he just eating her? Crushing her flesh and bones between his molars? Ending her pain and suffering? But she stayed silent, knowing it would come soon enough if she just waited.
His anger continued to grow and his grip tightened on the small child as he began to violently shake her. "I asked you a question!" He barked angrily, his blood boiling as he continued to shake the human in his fist.
Mara's stomach lurched at each motion. He was just prolonging her death. As he continued to shake her, tears broke free and ran down her face as she started to quietly sob. "Kill me." She whispered.
When he heard the soft cries begin, he stopped shaking her with a smug grin before he heard her barely audible whisper. Kill her? She...wants him to kill her? Why isn't she afraid? His eyes scanned her face, watching teardrops roll from her cheeks onto his skin. Then her voice gradually become louder and more desperate.
"Kill me...kill me...kill me! Kill me! Kill me!" She shouted at the giant, tears now streaming down her face as she loudly cried and used a fist to hit the hand holding her. "Kill me!"
Silas was so used to hearing humans beg for their life, that he didn't quite know what to do in this situation. Something else began to stir in his heart. What was this? Perhaps...compassion? Whatever it was, the more he watched the human the more it grew until he couldn't bear it anymore.
He pressed the tiny child into his chest. His large finger awkwardly rubbing her back. "Girl? Why do you want to die?" He asked in a curious tone, but the cries for him to kill her didn't stop. It didn't seem like they were going to unless he found a way to calm her down.
Mara shook against the giant's chest, able to hear his heart thumping in her ears. But she didn't want comfort. She wanted him to kill her, so she continued to scream and cry. Then something happened she did not intend. The next words that left the mouth of the giant man made her fall silent in both shock and confusion.
"Let me take care of you," Silas whispered to the human child. Why he decided this, he doesn't know. Something about this child was different from the other humans. And he wanted to learn more. Once the girl's screaming halted, he knew it was her agreeing and finally began to make his way home.
