"I don't want to go with them! Please don't make me!" The tiny Borrower child gripped onto Kelsey's finger, hot tears dripping down her cheeks. "I'll miss you!"
Kelsey very delicately placed a kiss on the top of Johanna, her adoptive daughters head. "I'll miss you too. But they're your real parents, they came for you." She spoke softly, gently lifting the small girl off of the table and onto the floor. "They'll be waiting for you."
"Mama, please. Please don't make me go. I love you, I want to stay with you! I don't wanna go back in the walls, I-I don't wanna have to be scared of everything again!" Johanna pleaded through choked sobs, trying her best to hold onto her mother's large finger.
Kelsey and Johanna had been living happily together when the Borrower couple returned from a long journey for supplies. Johanna had told Kelsey that they left and hadn't come home, so Kelsey had thought they abandoned the four-year-old girl. Johanna had actually revealed herself and was nervous, but she had asked Kelsey for some food as the stash her parents left her had run out.
A sad smile crept onto Kelsey's face and she very gently ruffled Johanna's hair. "Sweetie, you'll just be living in the walls here. You can come out an visit me anytime you like. I will always love you."
Johanna let out another loud sob, not wanting to let go of the fingers. Her parents were always busy when they were around, but Kelsey took care of her. She loved her, and she wanted to stay out in the open with her as her mother.
Tears began to brim in Kelsey's own eyes. "Y-You're making this very difficult for me." She scooped up Johanna, giving her several small kisses. "I-It'll be okay sweetpea, it's okay."
A young Borrower couple entered the room, the small woman staring nervously up at Kelsey. "U-Um, my husband and I spoke f-for a little bit. Since we'll be in the walls, m-maybe Johanna can stay with you. Sh-She seems much happier with you, and we just want our little girl to be safe. And she is with you."
The husband nodded his head. "We do a lot to try and stay alive, it's no good way for a little girl to be raised."
Johanna's little blue eyes grew to the size of saucers, and she looked up at Kelsey expectantly. "Please, mama? Please don't say no!" The four-year-old pleaded, nuzzling her face into the tip of the finger she was clinging to.
With a wide, gentle smile, Kelsey nodded her head. "I-I'd love to. She's absolutely wonderful, and I've grown quite attached to her. Thank you." She knelt down, using her free hand to offer the young couple a ride to their hole in the other room.
"No, thank you. We're quite fine walking. And we hope that you're fine with us staying here. We're supposed to leave when we're seen but...I think we can break the rules this time since you seem fairly kind enough." The male Borrower said with a deep chuckle, grasping his wife's hand and the two tiny people began their trek to their home.
"I can stay! I can stay!" Johanna squealed, squeezing the finger tighter and looking up at Kelsey with a happy smile.
Kelsey simply smiled at the young girl before going back to watching the Borrower couple go around the corner, out of sight. She wondered if she should put them out of mind as well.
