Hades sighed heavily, his fingers gently stroking the top of Cerberus's head. The black three-headed hound was just the size of a normal dog to him. "She's supposed to be here by now, she's late," the God of the Underworld grunted to nobody.
His Queen, Persephone, had gone back to be with her mother for the Spring and Summer. Summer has come to an end, it was time for her to return to him and be by his side. However, she seemed to be lollygagging instead of coming straight home to his dark palace. This was the first time, though, that she had to say goodbye to her mother, so he decided to be just a little more patient.
The months without her went by so painfully slow, it was enough to drive the God insane. When she was here, the wails of the damned outside his home grew tolerable, whilst without her here to distract him, they seemed even louder than before. And Cerberus, the giant, terrifying hound? He became nothing short of a puppy around the tiny Goddess.
At last, the doorway to the throne room was pushed open, two of his guards escorting the young Queen. Her blue eyes met his almost immediately, and she gathered up her purple skirt and curtsied respectfully. "Lord Hades," she said politely, lifting her head. Persephone was smiling now, her eyes sparkling happily. She held a basket around one of her arms, a white cloth covering its contents.
"My darling Queen," Hades stood from his golden throne and knelt to the ground, one of his pale hands extending towards her to scoop her from the stone floor. "I missed you very much."
Before his fingers could graze her skin, she dropped her wicker basket and flung her body into his palm. Her thin arms snaked around one of his fingers. Her tiny body pressed itself into his skin, and she placed delicate kisses against the pad of his finger. "And I've missed you, Hades. I'm sorry I'm late, I really am, but I had a last-minute idea. Please don't be angry with me."
He hated how pleading her voice sounded. She was still afraid, that much he knew, and while it hurt him he also knew she had every right to fear for her life. "My dear Persephone, I could never be angry with you," he cooed softly, his pale but soft lips pressing a feather-light kiss to the top of her blonde head.
Persephone's smiled widened, and she closed her eyes as she relaxed in the gentle hands. He's changed so much since they met. He was so shy at first and so afraid to touch her out of fear of harming her. And now, he would scoop her up whenever, hold her, cradle her, kiss her. And she loved every moment of it. Of their time together.
And being Queen of the Dead wasn't as horrible as it had originally sounded. People respected her. The demons and whatnot that dwelled in this dark place treated her the same way they did Hades. Respectfully, warmly. She was surprised to find how welcoming everyone had been towards her, despite how they were literally in the Underworld. She wasn't treated like a little kid like she was with the other Gods and around her mother.
Cradling her in his palms, Hades smiled down at her as he knelt on the floor. "Last minute idea, you said? What sort of idea?"
"Oh!" Persephone's smile widened and she leapt from his palm easily to the floor, her purple gown cascading around her legs as she fell. She gathered up her wicker basket and lifted her head to meet Hades' maroon-colored eyes. "You said you hate how there isn't any color here, so," pulling back the white cloth, she revealed many different kinds of flower seed packets. "I wanted to try and grow them here! So you could have some color when I'm away."
The King of the Dead was touched by his newlywed wife's offer and smiled toothily down at her. "You're very thoughtful, my love. But would they survive without you here?"
"I'm sure as long as I love you, and you love me, they'll thrive," she stated with an equally toothy grin. She yelped in surprise as his pale hands once more lifted her from the ground.
His plush lips planted tiny, gentle kisses all over her head and body, as if he took care to cover every inch of her in his affection. He ignored her complaints of it tickling, and seemed to only do it lighter just to tickle her skin a little more.
"Hades, my darling, please!" Persephone laughed, pressing her hands gently against his skin. Once he'd calmed himself, he left his nose right there so she could lean against it and place a few of her own little kisses on him.
"It isn't my fault it's so boring here without you," the God murmured against his tiny wife, closing his eyes to relax.
"You're right, I'm a joy to have around," she responded, closing her own eyes to enjoy the moment. Oh, how she'd missed him just as much as he'd missed her. "Oh, one more thing..." Carefully, she stretched her arms up and placed a tiny bunch of white tulips in his hair to stand out against the black locks. "There we go."
Finally, a sharp bark caught her attention and her once relaxed expression showed one of pure excitement. "Cerberus!"
"Hm?" Hades opened his eyes and glanced over to the three-headed hound which waited patiently beside his throne. "Ah, yes, he's missed you too. Come here, boy."
The large black hound trotted over and Hades was able to gently lower the tiny Goddess onto one of the black pooch's heads. He whined happily, one of the heads turning to place nose kisses against her.
"I missed you too, sweetheart," Persephone cooed, lightly scratching the top of the dog's head and reaching behind his ears. "Who's a good boy? Come on, who's a good boy?"
Hades watched her with a fond, loving smile. He lifted one hand to gently touch the flowers she'd placed in his hair, and once again closed his eyes. If he focused hard enough, he could faintly smell the scent of the Earth just with her being here. And having her here was enough to make the God happy. It's all he'd ever wanted after all, and now he had it. He had everything.
