Melanie remembers when Laura found her. How could she forget the day she met her best friend?

It had been a pretty basic day. Melanie was out gathering small pieces of wood and some grass to start a fire that night to stay warm and ward of predators. She was only the size of a human's middle finger, and the world was a big scary place for her kind. An unknown species called Minikins.

She lived in a hollow tree in the middle of the woods, although it was near a path that humans ran on. She wasn't sure why they ran when nothing was chasing them though. The only reason she stayed was that now and then a human would drop something useful to her. Let it be a piece of string or a small snack.

Just as Melanie had gotten ready to return to her hollow tree, a shadow loomed over her. A small squeal of fear emitted from her throat as she turned and stared up into the face of a female human who was looking down at her curiously. How she didn't hear the giant approach she'd never know.

"Why, hello there." The woman spoke with a soft voice, but it wasn't enough to rid her of the fear.

Melanie remained quiet, not daring to move as her breathing quickened and her heart raced in her chest.

"I was out for a jog and was on my way home. Why are you out here all alone?" The woman continued to talk as she began to kneel to the ground.

Taking a small step back, the Minikin swallowed the lump rising in her throat to attempt to answer the human's questions in fear of angering the giant. "I-I've always been a-alone, F-For as long as I can remember."

"Oh, you're scared...and that's sad." The human frowned, and without warning, her hand came down over Melanie who didn't even have time to run. "Please, don't be. I can absolutely promise that I will never hurt you."

Melanie turned and stared up into the dark brown eyes. There was nothing but kindness in them. Nothing but kindness and a little bit of pity. And for the first time in her life, Melanie actually felt safe near a human.

And from then on, the two became very close as the years went by. Laura took care of the Minikin as if they were sisters. And it really felt like they were. When Laura went shopping, Melanie would ride in her purse and the human would let her pick out some junk food sometimes. The years flew by fast...too fast.

The thing about Minikins is that they're immortal. They won't die of old age, and they won't age at all. The only way a Minikin would die is if they were killed.

Now Melanie sits on the hospital bed of her elderly friend, holding tightly onto the hospital gown. "Y-You'll be okay Laura." She whispered through tears.

"Don't k-kid yourself," Laura mumbled with a soft cough, reaching her hand out towards her tiny friend to allow her to climb on.

Scrambling onto the hand, Melanie stared up into her friend's wrinkly face as hot tears continued to run down her face. "I-I have no one else in this big world. You can't leave me, not yet."

The elderly woman only managed a weak smile as her dark brown eyes slowly closed and her hand fell onto her lap.

Tumbling from the palm Melanie stared up at the human. "L-Laura...?" She whispered. When she received no response she broke down into hysterical sobs. "No! You can't leave! You can't!" She practically screamed. She grabbed onto one of her fingers, tugging on it as if to try and wake her up. "Wake up! O-Open your eyes! Laura!"

Hot tears continued to pour down her face as she fell to her knees, sobbing into her hands. Why did she let herself get so attached to a human she knew she was going to lose? Now she was all alone and had someone that she remembered. And she can't take it.

Remaining on her knees, Melanie drug herself to the edge of the hospital bed as light sobs continued to pass her lips. She stared down at the tile floor far below her and her vision blurred from the tears.

After a minute of just sitting there, she took a deep breath. It was then she pushed herself off the bed, watching as the ground rushed to meet her.
