4|| Just Friends

My eyes fluttered open, a migraine pounding through my head. I felt something warm around my waist. Keith was asleep, with his arms wrapped around me. What HAPPENED last night? Carefully, I wiggled out of Keith's embrace, hoping not to wake him.

I snuck over to the kitchen, were Hunk was making breakfast. Rubbing my eyes, I said. "Good morning."

"Morning," Hunk replied. Not wanting to avoid the subject any longer, I spoke up.

"Hey, Hunk?"

"Yeah?"

"What exactly happened last night?"

"Um, well, you kinda made out with the person you dislike the most on this ship."

"Oh, God, please no."

"Yeahhhh, that happened."

"How?"

"Lance dared him."

"Oh he is fucking dead."

"I mean, we were all drunk, Jade. No one thought straight last night."

I huffed. "What's for breakfast?"

"Food goo. Same as usual."

"Oh, I was expecting something like pancakes."

"I would make them, but I don't think I'm entirely sober and might end up blowing up the kitchen."

"Fair point."

Keith walked into the kitchen, groaning something about his head hurting. He saw me and his eyes widened. Well, he remembered last night. We both blushed and looked away from each other. 

"Um, I'll leave you two to talk," Hunk said, and promptly left the kitchen. Keith looked at me, but I was still looking at the floor.

"Jade, um... I'm sorry for last night? I honestly have no idea what I was doing, I was irrespons–"

"I-it's okay, Keith, we were both drunk–"

"I shouldn't have let myself drink that."

"No, now that it's coming back, it wasn't so bad," I mumbled.

"Y-You liked it?"

"Kinda," I said shyly, Jesus, what was wrong with me? Keith gave me a smile, which I was too shy to return.

"So, um, friends? For now."

"Yeah, I-I'd like that."

Suddenly the alarms started blaring.

"PALADINS, TO YOUR LIONS NOW!! THE GALRA ARE ATTACKING!!!" Allura's voice yelled over the intercom. Keith gave me a scared look.

"Look, I have to go, stay safe, don't do anything stupid," he gave me a quick hug before rushing off."

"Hey! I want to fight too! Keith!" I rushed out after him. He was at his lion, in full armor, about to get in when he saw me.

"JADE! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING HERE? NOT DOING ANYTHING STUPID INCLUDES COMING NEAR GIANT ROBOT CATS THAT CAN BLAST YOU TO BITS!!!"

I ran up to him. "I'll be your co-pilot."

"Wha-no, you are not getting involved in this."

I stomped my foot. "We are in the same fight. They took your mother, they took my childhood. I want to fight them because of what they took, not because I don't want you dying."

"Fine. Get it and don't touch anything. I'll tell you what to do."

I climbed up to the Red Lion. She growled at me.

"Look Red, We don't have much time, and I need some way to avenge what I lost. Please. Let me fight besides you."

She growled softer, but opened her mouth so I could climb in anyway. "Thank  you," I whispered. I climbed into the extra seat, Keith sitting down after me.

"Keith, are you there?" Allura's voice asked.

"Yeah, Jade's here with me too, she's co-piloting."

"Co-piloting? Red is letting her? Never mind, does she have armor?"

"No."

"Quiznak! Okay, Jade, there should be some spare armor in the torso part of Keith's lion. Go there and you should see several pods with armor. Hurry!"

"On it!" I yelled and ran for the back of Red. There were three pods of the same type of armor that Allura wore. There was an orange, a white, and an indigo one. I grabbed the indigo and put it on. The suit adjusted to fit my size, and I put on the helmet after.

I ran back to the control room and sat down. "Ready?" Keith asked. I nodded. "Okay, let's go."

The lion zoomed out of the hangar and into space where we were immediately met by the heat of the battle.

"Jade, what your going to do as co-pilot will be to aim extra weapons at the galra cruisers and battleships. I'll be controlling where she flies and the main weapons."

"Got it," I said, looking through the weapons that were shown on the screen. I immediately noticed what looked like a giant fire blaster on the top of the Lion. I picked that one and started aiming at the Galra fighters. I hit multiple at once with the giant blaster.

"Ohh, this one's fun," I said, shooting more fighters.

"Aim for the cruiser!" Keith yelled, who was dealing with his own fighters. I looked around for the cruiser, but it was right above us. I aimed straight up and fired. The heat caused wherever I hit to explode, making the cruiser fall apart. The rest of the fighters retreated and the planet was peaceful again.

"Good work Jade!" Shiro said.

"That blaster was awesome!" Lance exclaimed. "You need to be my co-pilot next time!"

"Thanks guys," I said gratefully, happy that I was of some use.

Everyone flew back to the castle and we all had lunch.
