"Essie!" Susie pulled me aside after Tom and Rob finished.
"Why's your hair messy? And your clothes? Why's your makeup all- what happened?" She asked.
"Slept in my clothes and makeup..." I lied.
"I didn't see you in your room this
Morning," she said.
"Yeah Matt picked me up for some breakfast and we walked around Beverly Hills and lost track of time," I said.
"Okay..." She said.
"Can we go back in now?" I asked. Francis was sorting papers and talking to Fred and Christine. We joined them.
"I think Tommy has the job. And Tom. Cruise just has to be Steve. I've seen him as every other role, he just has to be Steve," Francis said.
"And Ralph. Ralph's Johnny. He said he's been wanting this role and he'll get it. Rob's Sodapop. Emilio's Two-Bit. And Matt's Dallas."
"What about Darry?" Christine asked.
"We offered it to Mickey Rourke. He turned us down. We thought about someone else but he agreed to another time."
"Who wants to break the news to who?"
"Uh, I'll take Matt. Christine, you can take Rob. Susie you can take Tom. Fred can take Ralph and Emilio. And Essie you can do Tommy. And then we'll call them out and tell them to go home," Francis said. Never your dispersed but I stayed put and struggled to find Tommy in the sea of boys. I went outside and saw him smoking a cigarette, back against the building.
"Tommy," I said. He jumped and looked back at me.
"Oh hi," he dropped his cigarette and stomped it out.
"I'm Essie," I said.
"I know," he said.
"Well I was told to deliver the news. Congratulations, Tommy, you're Ponyboy Curtis!" I said. A smile was plastered on his face.
"Really?!" He jumped up.
"Yea, yeah, you got the part!"
"OH MY GOD!" He hugged me and kissed my cheek and squeezed my hand.
"Thank you, thank you so much!" He ran back inside. I followed.
"Okay settle down, settle down. We got the cast list..." Francis yelled so everyone would shut up.
"We got Tommy Howell as Ponyboy Curtis. Rob Lowe as Sodapop Curtis. Emilio Estevez as Two- Bit Mathews. Tom Cruise as Steve Randle. Matt Dillon as Dallas Winston. Glenn Withrow as Tim Shepard. Diane Lane as Cherry Valance. Ralph Macchio as Johnny Cade. Leif Garett as Bob Sheldon. Darren Dalton as Randy Anderson. We don't have a Darry quite yet. We'll let you know as soon as possible. Thank you. You can all go home now," Francis said.
