"Oh, hey, what are you doing here?" I said.
"I needed to get away from your mother," he said. I laughed and gave him a hug.
"And before you ask, Susie gave me the address," he said.
"Come in," I said, opening the door.
"I met your mother, Matt," my dad said, holding out his hand for him to shake. Matt took hold and shook.
"How?"
"She was struggling with getting some groceries so in exchange of helping her with her groceries, she told me where exactly this place was. Wonderful woman," he said.
"Well, we don't really have a lot of furniture yet so uh, just take a seat wherever," I said.
"Thank you," my dad sat on the floor and sat crisscrossed.
"How's the operation going?" He said.
"Uh, we're just starting painting. We're going back to Tulsa in two days."
"Why?"
"Wrap-up. And then we're coming back," I said.
"Well you've got to come get some stuff. Your mothers about to throw it into the street," he said.
"Well I'm not driving all the way to Miami. We're getting my stuff in Tulsa next week and bringing it up here," I said.
"Suit yourself. How's the painting going?"
"We're just starting and then we'll come back and do it."
"What are you painting the living room?"
"Red," Matt answered and sat on the floor.
"Red and Yellow?" My dad asked. I collapsed in Matt's crisscrossed lap and wrapped my arm around his neck.
"Yeah."
"What's the color of the bedroom? Royal blue?"
"We don't know. We're thinking white," I said.
"How does it feel to be engaged?" My dad said.
"Good, almost like I'm in a glorious limbo," Matt said.
"Limbo?"
"Transition. Like we're moving forward, but it's unreal," Matt said. If my father hadn't been there I would've flattened him on the floor and-
"Yeah I felt like that when I was engaged," my dad said.
"What happened?" I said.
"What?"
"What happened that Mom became like that?"
"Charlie's appendix burst when he was five. And she prayed to God he'd be ok then and she prays to God the human race is okay," my dad said.
"She wasn't like that when we were kids," I said.
"No. I don't know, I've seen the evolution and it hadn't been pretty."
"When we have kids, I'm gonna be so good to them, it'll be sickening," I said.
"I hope you do. Speaking of which, are you planning on having children in the future?" My dad asked.
"I want to. Essie still hasn't answered me," Matt said.
"I don't know. It's a big step."
"It can change a person," my dad said.
"Well, having kids is hard."
"That never stopped your mother and I. And Matt's parents. How many siblings you got Matt?"
"Five. I'm one of six."
"See? And your mother may not hate you as much when she has a grandchild. Now c'mon."
"Are you saying you want me to become pregnant?"
"I may or may not be saying that. That's up to you to interpret."
