"Here, you need more pillows?" I said to Matt. He waved me off and laid back in bed.
"How you doing?" I said.
"Sore," he said, trying to make himself comfortable in the pillows.
"So sore that it hurts?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Well, let me take a look. It's time to change your bandage anyway," I said, walking into the bathroom and starting to fill up a small basin with water, some new bandages, and some rags. Once I filled it up, I brought it to the chair and set it down before sitting on the edge of the bed by Matt's side.
"Can you get up? Come on," I said, holding his shoulders as he pulled himself up, wincing. Once he was up, he was still grimacing.
"Okay, I'm gonna take your bandage off," I said, finding the end of the bandage and gently unwrapping it around his torso. I revealed a blood hole in his abdomen the size of quarter, but deep enough to fill with water. I sucked in my teeth at the sight.
"Wow...okay, this may sting," I said, grabbing a rag, dipping it in the water and compressing it against the wound.
"Mmm," he dug his fingers into my shoulder. I pressed on it for a while and put it back on the chair. I applied a little cream around the hole and some pads on it. I wrapped the bandage around again and tightened it and told him he could lay back down.
"Essie?"
"Hmm?"
"How come you could have any guy in the world, and you choose me?" he said. I smiled.
"Because you're the only guy I want in the world," I said. He grinned and put his hand out.
"Come here," he said. I wiped my hands on a dry rag and kneeled by the bed, taking his hand.
"Why do you love me?" He said.
"Because you always have time for me, and you're funny and protective and loving and childish and cute... Do I need to go on because I could for hours?" I said. He smiled.
"Yeah? You think I'm cute?"
"Yeah, you're cute."
"Do you really think I'm a pig?"
"No. I just say that, I don't really think you're like that."
"Essie?"
"Hmm?"
"Do you want to have a baby? In the future?"
"I guess. I mean not right now."
"No but soon."
"Uhh, I don't know. Do you?"
"Yeah."
"I mean we'd have to figure out finances and schedules and career moves if that happens. And I would be pregnant for nine months."
"I know but I'd take really good care of you," he said.
"You would?"
"Yeah, I'd make sure you'd be comfortable and give you back rubs and take you to appointments and-"
"I know you would. But it's okay. We don't need to do this right now."
"Okay. But I'm just saying."
"I know."
