"A long, long time ago people worshiped the gods. It wasn't the God of Catholicism, no. The great myth of the Greek Gods from Olympus. People fear them, adored them, worshiped them. Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. The most powerful brothers. Zeus, the ruler of all, was married to Hera, but as known for most, he had his affairs. And one, in particular, he was graced in having twins"
"Apollo and Artemis" I answered already knowing the story.
"That's right," Grams answered, "The twins, one god of the sun, the other of the moon. Together they were the perfect match, they loved and would do anything for one another. Artemis was different from the most goddess. She rejected love and man, she wanted to be free and protect what she believed was her true home. She made the forests and the animals living in there as well as the tamed ones her kingdom, they were under her protection. And with her father's approval, she managed to do it. She was turned into the goddess of the chastity, virginity, the hunt, the moon, and the natural environment"
"But she did fell in love with a man," I piped in again.
"Indeed, she fell. But Apollo intervened, he sent an enormous scorpion after Orion. Meanwhile, Apollo visited his sister. He said an evil man, Candaon, had the night previous attacked and raped Opos, one of her hyperborean priestesses, and was right now swimming to a distant island, hoping to escape the wrath of Artemis. No one escapes the vengeance of Artemis when one of her own has been ravaged. "Without even pausing to first comfort Opos, she grabbed her quiver and sped down to the sea. Apollo followed her and pointed out the speck in the distance that was Orion's head, still putting distance between himself and the scorpion. 'There he is,' Apollo said, standing behind her so his face could not betray his treachery. Artemis loosed her arrow with unerring aim and slew her friend. When he saw his plan had succeeded, Apollo ran away.
"Artemis went back to the forest and found Opos who supposedly had been raped. Opos was unharmed and knew nothing of an attack. When Artemis saw the girl was well, she soon deduced the truth. She retrieved Orion's body, but even Asclepius could not revive him, though he applied drops of the gorgon's blood to the lifeless lips of Artemis's true friend. Orion's spirit had already descended to Asphodel Fields. Apollo thought Artemis's chastity was still unarmed, but soon came the knowledge of the baby her sister was carrying. It stayed a secret between the brother and sister, no one could know about the betrayal of one of Artemis's highest rules. So she hid, gave birth, and send the baby away to be cared among the humans. "But the baby, as all demigods, had something special. It carried Artemis's powers and the goddess couldn't help but took wonder in the child. And so she protected her and all the bloodline that followed with her gift. This child, she protected the same things Artemis did and that's why she took such a wonder. The only thing that separated both of them was love. The child loved and had a family, she grown and kept growing and the gift she had was passing through her blood, but only for the women.
"My mother told me that story, she taught me about all of this, and when I was your age strange things started to happen and so my mother told me. The story she always told me was real, we were descents of this secret child. And so she taught me more, how to fight, how to protect" "How can this be possible?" I asked, "Gods and Goddess, werewolves, supernatural..." "The same way humans exists," grandma simply replied, "Now, remember everything you told me. What Stiles told you. The bow, the silver eyes? Doesn't it remind you of someone?"
Suddenly it dawned on me. Silver bow and eyes were characteristics of Artemis, that I know so, but I never imagined that I could be somehow related to her. I thought it was all fake stories to calm people and make them work. I think grandma saw the look on my face since she continued.
"Emily, I know it is a lot to take on in one day, but what I'm going to tell you is really important. Sometimes, the power is in a high form than in others as it passed through the generations. When it is high, we have to be more careful. The powers of the goddess in not to be messed with"
